COTOPAXI, Colo. – At least two people and one dog died early Monday in a fire at a home in Cotopaxi—a census-designated place about 75 miles west of Pueblo.

The fire happened around 2:30 a.m. Monday in the 1300 block of 34th Trail in Cotopaxi. After Fremont County sheriff’s deputies and Deer Mountain Fire crews started fighting the fire, deputies discovered there were people dead inside the home, according to Fremont County Undersheriff Megan Richards. The home was eventually a total loss.

Richards said investigators have already discovered two people and a dog inside the home but said that crews haven’t been able to search all of the rubble because the fire is still hot.

She said the sheriff’s office and Colorado Bureau of Investigation were still investigating the fire and the deaths. An autopsy for the bodies is scheduled for later this week, after which the identities of the victims will be released.
