AURORA, Colo. -- A 13-year-old girl fought off an attacker Tuesday evening on the Highline Canal Trail just south of South Middle School, police said Wednesday.

According to Aurora police, an adult man came up to the girl and pushed her to the ground while she was walking along the trail around 6 p.m. Tuesday. Police said the girl fought the man off and he fled the area.

Police said they haven’t determined a motive for the attack. The suspect is described as a light-skinned black man between the ages of 17 and 26. He is approximately 5-foot-10 with a “heavy build,” police said, and was wearing a dark sweatshirt and riding a bicycle at the time.

The Aurora Police Department said it was working on a composite sketch of the suspect Wednesday afternoon.

The attack is the latest on the Highline Canal Trail. In March, a high school girl running along the trail near S. Quebec Way was tackled and attacked, but was able to fight off the attacker and go to a nearby home.

And last year, a man was charged with attacks along a portion of the trail that runs through Jefferson County.

Aurora police ask anyone with information about the latest incident to contact Crimes Against Children Unit Detective Jeremy Jenkins at 303-739-6129 or Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867.
