10 a.m. | BA.4/BA.5 sublineages of omicron now dominant strains in Colorado

The BA.4/BA.5 sublineages of the omicron variant are now the dominant strains spreading in the state of Colorado, according to data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

CDPHE COVID-19 data shows BA.4 and BA.5 make up 11.90% and 38.10% of all sequenced tests, effectively outpacing BA.2.12.1, which made up 45.24% of all sequenced tests as of June 19. Due to lag in reporting, it's likely the number of sequenced tests that are now BA.4 and BA.5 is greater than what current data shows.

Studies suggest these two sublineages are better able to escape immunity provided by either prior vaccination or infection, though current COVID-19 vaccines are still expected to protect against severe disease and death. However, a recent study revealed those who repeatedly catch COVID-19 will go on to develop new and sometimes lasting health problems after their infection, according to CNN.

As of July 2, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated the BA.5 sublineage to make up 54% of all cases across the country.

In Denver, the city's public health department has previously said there will not be a citywide mask mandate to stop the spread of these variants since hospitalizations do not appear to be rising at a level that would overwhelm the health care system.
