Ke’Arre Stewart and Jennifer Markovsky were killed at the Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood on Friday when gunman entered the building and started shooting.
Markovsky and Stewart were each parents of two children.
Garrett Swasey, a police officer for University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, also died in the line of duty.
Leyonte Chandler describes his brother Ke’Arre as a man dedicated to his two girls.
“He was kind even though he was, you know, the macho type,” he said.
Stewart served a tour in Iraq and stayed in Colorado Springs after the army because, his brother says, “he loved the snow."
Chandler says his brother stepped outside of the clinic to try to get cell phone service and that's when the gunman started shooting.
"He got shot and then he went back into the building to tell other people to take cover,” said Chandler, “so that was probably the most heroic moment of his life."
Julia Miller, Markovsky’s sister-in-law, tells Denver 7 that Markovsky was a stay-at-home mom and dedicated to her children.
“She was a sweet person,” said Miller. “Very kind to everyone.”
Swasey was also a father of two. His colleagues say he died while saving people.
"I am shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of my wife. She was a very caring and compassionate person and patient and understanding parent. She was deeply loved by all who knew her. She was always helping the kids do homework and reading books with them," said Markovsky's father in a statement. "We will miss her; her cooking, crafting and adventurous spirit. We ask for privacy now as we try to begin the grief and healing process."
“She didn’t deserve it,” said Chandler, “My brother didn’t deserve it and officer Swasey was just trying to do his job.”
One of Stewart’s friends has set up aGoFundMe account to help cover funeral costs and save money for his daughters.
A fundraising account has also been set up for Officer Swasey.
