A statewide law enforcement effort is underway to crack down on drug- and alcohol-impaired driving during the days before and after New Year's Eve.

The Longmont Times-Call reports state and local authorities stepped up their efforts during the pre-Christmas holiday season and arrested nearly 600 drivers. There will be 65 agencies participating in the heightened anti-DUI enforcement from Wednesday through Monday.

The holiday season crackdown is part of the state's annual "The Heat Is On" campaign.

Authorities are implementing sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and adding on-duty officers as part of the effort.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, there were 329 arrests across the state between Dec. 30, 2014 and Jan. 5, 2015.
