BROOMFIELD, Colo. -- Every parent wants their kids to "fit in" at school, not be bullied, and focus on learning, but that can be tough if money is tight. 7Everyday Hero Sue Fernau is working to change that.

"There is such a satisfaction with seeing that smile on the child's face. Or the excitement in them once they get those new clothes," Fernau said.

Fernau volunteers at A Precious Child. It is a non-profit that provides clothing and essentials that help hundreds of families.

"We try to help them with their basic essentials so they can concentrate on paying rent, putting food on the table and eventually help those families get out of poverty," said A Precious Child COO Courtney Wickberg.

Families can shop at the Precious Child resource center in Broomfield and kids can discreetly get clothing right inside many schools.

"I am in charge of a satellite program called the Precious Boutique. And we take clothing out to about 30 outlying schools that are in high need," Fernau said.

When teachers or counselors in a school report a need for clothing, Fernau begins shopping at the resource center for just the right size.

"So, they can feel good about what they're doing in school, because that's the most important thing is their self-esteem," Fernau said.

A Precious Child serves 39,000 children in eight Denver area counties. It can touch that many lives thanks for dozens of volunteers like Sue Fernau.

"Sue radiates joy and she brings that every single day.  She is amazing because she could be doing anything in the world and she just values the children that we serve," Wickberg said.

"I want to give back to the community. I feel I am so blessed with what I have. So, if I can give back to someone in need and make their life, that's important to me," Fernau said.

The 3rd Annual Denver Heroes of A Precious Child luncheon is set for Thursday, October 19th at 11:30 A.M. the downtown Denver Westin Hotel. The 7th Annual Broomfield Heroes of A Precious Child luncheon will be on Tuesday, October 31st at 11:10 A.M. at the Omni Interlocken Hotel.
