I am now at the age where I don’t mind lolling about with a face mask that promises to cleanse my skin and shrink my pores. Sure, it gives my husband and young daughter nightmares, but it feels good. Plus, I made the mistake of using the FaceApp aging feature the other day and what I saw will haunt me forever. My skin could use some TLC.

And now, with the launch of their latest collaboration with Nickelodeon, cruelty-free beauty brand HipDot has made skincare even more fun.

On Wednesday, July 17, HipDot launched its new SpongeBob beauty line. The collection includes a $36 Bikini Bottom Eye Palette in shimmering shades of teal, peach, yellow and more; a $30 Jellyfish Lip Gloss Trio in Coral Blue, Feelin’ Fineapple and Sea Star Gazer; and an $18 Sandy Cheeks Blush Bronzer. But perhaps the most eyebrow-raising item in the collection is the Best Friends Mask 4-Pack, featuring face masks in the form of SpongeBob and Patrick.

Available for $20, the set includes two SpongeBob masks and two Patrick masks. The SpongeBob mask is meant to hydrate your face, making it glow, while the Patrick mask will condition and nourish your skin. Which sounds fantastic, though the look of the masks is giving some people pause.

Twitter user Ashley Wong doesn’t mince words, writing simply, “spongebob face masks are nightmare fodder.”

But are they really? Is Ashley just being a party pooper? Let’s take a closer look, shall we? Here’s a photo of a model sporting the Spongebob face mask:

That looks fun!

And then there’s Patrick:

I don’t know. Maybe if she weren’t pursing her lips in the middle of what’s meant to be Patrick’s deranged, wide-mouthed smile …

Then again, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, when it comes down to it — all sheet masks look sort of horrifying. Why not have a little bit of fun with it?

HipDot isn’t the only brand to play around with the possibilities inherent in face mask-specific mashups. I mean, have you seen these animal print sheet masks, available for $17.50 on Amazon?

And what about this $8 emoji mask?

If we’re being honest, face masks haven’t gone far enough. Where’s my She-Ra and Catra best frenemies face mask set?

Which characters do you wish you could wear on your face? And will you be shopping the HipDot x Nickelodeon beauty collab?
