Adam Sandler’s New Movie Pays Tribute To Late Onscreen Son

“Hubie Halloween” is the perfect Netflix movie to get you in Halloween spirit this year. The comedy is co-written and co-produced by Adam Sandler, and he also stars in it as a self-appointed Halloween monitor who is ridiculed by others in Salem, Massachusetts as he tries to protect his town from perceived threats. Reviewers say the movie is silly and sweet in the usual Sandler style. And, it offers true sentiment in more ways than one.

In the closing credits, there is a tribute to Cameron Boyce, the actor who played one of Sandler’s sons in 2010’s “Grown Ups.” Boyce passed away from epilepsy in 2019 at the age of 20. He had been set to star in “Hubie Halloween,” too.

“In loving memory of Cameron Boyce,” the tribute reads. “Gone away too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.”

The day after his death on July 6, 2019, Sandler took to Twitter to memorialize Boyce, posting a black and white photo of him and writing, “Too young. Too sweet. Too funny.”

“Just the nicest, most talented and most decent kid around,” he continued. “Loved that kid. Cared so much about his family. Cared so much about the world. Thank you, Cameron, for all you gave to us. So much more was on the way. All our hearts are broken. Thinking of your amazing family and sending our deepest condolences.”

“Hubie Halloween” features several of Boyce’s co-stars on “Grown Ups” and “Grown Ups 2,” such as Maya Rudolph, Kevin James, Rob Scheider and Steve Buscemi.

“Hubie’s Halloween” also stars China Anne McClain, who was in “Grown Ups” and co-starred in two of Disney’s “Descendants” films with Boyce. Additionally, the cast list includes Peyton List and Karan Brar, who played Boyce’s (adopted) siblings on the Disney TV series “Jessie.”

Fans have taken these casting choices as an additional tribute, as pointed out in this Twitter post from user @Uhhlysssa:

On what would have been his 21st birthday earlier this year, Sandler posted a remembrance of Boyce on Instagram, sharing a photo of his friend and co-star, writing, “Happy birthday to Cameron. Would have been 21 years old. Such a great kid. We all miss him a lot. Especially his incredible family.”

He included a link to Know SUDPEP Now, an initiative to bring awareness and to end sudden unexpected death by epilepsy, the cause of Boyce’s death. The initiative is part of a partnership between The Cameron Boyce Foundation and the Epilepsy Foundation.

According to SUDPEP Now, one in 26 people will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. More than 3.4 million people in the United States live with the condition.
