DENVER AND ARVADA, Colo. – Denver and Arvada are among the Top Ten Digital Cities of 2016, according to a new survey by the Center for Digital Government (CDG).

The city of Denver took the seventh spot in the 500,000 or more population category, beating out san Francisco, Calif.

Arvada landed at the No. 9 spot within the 75,000 to 124,999 population range category, beating out the City of Ann Arbor in Michigan.

The annual survey, now in its 15th year, “recognizes cities using technology to improve citizen services, enhance transparency, and encourage citizen engagement.”

Judges evaluated submissions by considering ten key characteristics of a digital city:

  • Open
  • Mobile
  • Engaged
  • Collaborative
  • Secure
  • Staffed/supported
  • Connected
  • Efficient
  • Resilient
  • Innovative

In its submission for the survey, Arvada’s Department of Innovation and Technology said, “the city’s vision is to 'dream big and deliver'... [and] we will continually support the dreams of our citizens and colleagues by providing a tangible reality in which delivery can be born.”

One of the many services Arvada has provided to its citizens is enabling open access to government.

In its release, the CDG noted Arvada, “embraces and seeks to serve an informed citizenry...[because it recognizes that the] efficacy of democracy relies, in part, on citizen access to government data.”

The top five winners this year were Los Angeles, Calif.; Philadelphia, Penn.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Charlotte, N.C.; Seattle, Wash.; and Austin, Texas.
