DENVER – Comcast is rolling out some really fast-speed internet across the state of Colorado.

The company announced Wednesday it’s launching a new internet service that will deliver speeds up to 1 Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) to customers across the state.

“Our 1 Gig service will provide the fastest speed to the most homes – over existing wiring that most people already have in their homes,” said Rich Jennings, the Comcast Senior Vice President of the Mountain West Region.

Because the service will use existing communications lines already in most people’s homes, the 1 Gigabit internet service has the potential to reach more homes even faster and will allow for greater deployment across communities, officials said in press release.

If you’re already a Comcast customer, all you have to do is install a new DOCSIS 3.1 compatible cable modem capable of delivering gigabit speeds, officials added.

Comcast officials said the "everyday" price for 1 Gigabit internet service in Colorado will cost $159.95 without a contract. The company will test at $109.99 per month promotional price in select markets around the state.

What is Gigabit internet service?

Gigabit internet is the next generation of broadband internet service that provides speeds of 1,000 Megabits per second (Mbps).

It allows you to download at speeds 100 times faster than today’s average broadband connection, according to remote network management company Ihiji.

How fast is that? Think of it this way: With Gigabit speeds, you can download 100 photos and songs in just three seconds and an HD movie in about seven seconds.
