It sounds like a scam, but it's true -- the state of Colorado may have money for you!
The state is holding over $600 million in forgotten funds and assets for residents.
These are items left in safe deposit boxes, tax refunds that were sent but returned because the person moved, utility deposits, bank accounts that were inactive for too long and closed.
To see if the state has money for you, just go to the Great Colorado Payback on the state of Colorado's website. Click on Search Property and Claim Status and enter your name.
You don't have to pay anyone to do this, you can search yourself. And if you've lived in other states, google that state's name and "unclaimed property" to find that state's website.
"Unclaimed property and cash are turned over to the state once a business is unable to make contact with the owner for five years," according to the Colorado Department of the Treasury. "While the most common type of unclaimed property is cash, the Treasurer’s Office is also trying to track down the owner of a dozen diamonds, a silver brick, and a Babe Ruth baseball card."
From July 1, 2015 to December 24, 2015, the state was able to give back $14,874,191.65 in cash and property to its owners.
