US Postal Service rolling out digital delivery confirmation system

Posted

DENVER -- Just about all of us have sent or received valuables in the mail, and we expect it to get where it’s going with no issues.

But sometimes a crook gets involved and prevents a safe delivery.  A U.S. Postal Service worker in Denver was recently caught on camera at the USPS distribution center in Stapleton allegedly going through envelopes taking money out and then stuffing it into her pocket.

“There’s been a history of it -- especially around the holidays,” said USPS customer Gary Fields.

It’s not an isolated issue.

Just a few months ago, 26,000 pieces of mail didn’t get where they were supposed to go in Sterling.

A postal worker opened, destroyed or stashed letters he was supposed to deliver.

But a new option for people wary of having their mail stolen is a U.S. Postal Service program called “Informed Delivery.”

You get an email each morning with digital scans of letters you'll get in your mailbox later that day.

If they never show up, you know to follow up with the post office.

Scotty Steve depends on the postal service for his t-shirt business, so he likes that idea.

“That’s great. That’s a great service and I’ll definitely sign up for it,” said Steve.

This program was tested in several states before its nationwide rollout begins mid-April.

The USPS says 9 out of 10 people checked the digital notifications every day.
