Last-minute tax filers guide to Tax Day

DENVER – Tax Day 2017 is upon us, and if you have waited until the very last minute to file, you're not alone. Last year, more than 20 million Americans filed on or the week prior to Tax Day.

If you need to prepare and fie your taxes, there is still help out there. Here are some resources available to last-minute tax filers:

  • Denver ABC Supersite at Mi Casa Resource is providing free tax preparation until April 25. Services are both in English and Spanish. Appointments are not required. Location: 360 Acoma Street| Hours: Mon., Tue., Wed: 5:30 p.m. – 9 p.m.; Sat. 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

What is the VITA program? 

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

What you'll need to bring:

  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse and dependents 
  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter may be substituted for you, your spouse and your dependents if you do not have a Social Security number
  • Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Proof of bank account routing and account numbers for direct deposit such as a blank check
  • To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms
  • Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number such as their Social Security number or business Employer Identification Number
  • Forms 1095-A, B and C, Health Coverage Statements
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable.

Last-minute tax filers? Denver Area Post Offices are ready

With the exception of one location, Denver area post offices will not be staying open late. The Denver General Mail Facility office at 7550 E. 53rd Place will be open until 10 p.m. Tuesday.  All other area Post Office retail windows will maintain regular customer service hours.

The following will not have extended retail services, but the collection boxes outside the office will be available for properly stamped envelopes until midnight.

  • Downtown Station, 951 20th St.
  • Glendale Station, 945 Birch St.    
  • Lakewood Station, 10799 W. Alameda Ave.

Need more time?

Make sure to request an extension or face a penalty. The fee is 5 percent of your unpaid taxes for every month you don't file. It caps out at 25 percent of your outstanding balance.

Even if you request an extension, any money you owe the government is still due today.
