Deputies warn of spike in daytime burglaries

Deputies are warning residents about a spike in daytime burglaries in Jefferson County, especially south JeffCo.

"This past week, we had numerous garage burglaries in three separate apartment complexes where the garages are detached from the buildings and an unknown person(s) broke into several adjacent garages," the Jefferson County Sheriff's office said.

Investigators are asking residents to lock the door between their garage and home and keep their garage doors closed and locked.

Investigators are also asking residents to bring their garage remote into their home with their keys, instead of leaving the remote in the vehicle.

"Though we’ve got snow on the ground right now, the warmer weather often leads to garage doors being left open, which makes it an easy target for criminals," deputies said.

Officials are recommending the following burglary deterrents:

  • Trim all trees up from the ground by 5 to 6 feet
  • Trim bushes and shrubs down below all windows
  • Install motion detection lighting in front and back of home
  • Use a bar to secure rear sliding glass door
  • Secure gates leading to your back yard
  • Remove any home or vehicle keys from garage
  • Close blinds and/or shades
  • Replace short door strike plate screws with longer ones
  • Put lights in the home on timers
