Amazon says it will begin charging Colorado customers a sales tax in February.

"Amazon will be required to collect sales tax in Colorado beginning on 2/1," an Amazon spokeswoman told Denver7.

Currently, Amazon collects sales tax Items for items shipped to destinations in 27 states. However, Colorado was not one of those states.

Amazon has always expected customers in Colorado to pay state sales tax. In the past, Amazon expected customers to pay that fee directly to the state, but now the company says it will collect it directly from customers.

The tax is calculated on the total selling price of each individual item, generally including item-level shipping and handling charges, according to Amazon's website.
