DENVER -- Shopping for Thanksgiving dinner may not be on your mind, but the holiday is just two weeks away! And experts say this is the best time to shop for the big meal.

The list adds up fast and the cost can, too.

"All the grocery stores have amazing sales right now, and frankly, they are not going to get cheaper between now and Thanksgiving," said Eva Fry, founder of the uGrocery app.

To help shoppers save money on their Thanksgiving dinners, Fry put out her six ways to save:

  • Plan the menu out, count your guests and make the shopping list.
  • Start buying now. You can wait to buy fresh green beans, fresh cranberries, rolls, frozen pies, sweet potatoes and a bag of potatoes. Fry said these items would drop down in price as Thanksgiving Day gets closer.
  • Everyone's list will be different. Price compare at stores and watch out for deals. Safeway is having a free turkey promotion through November 14th. When you spend a hundred dollars, you get a free turkey.
  • Keep decorations simple. Fry said to skip the expensive flowers and bring in small, inexpensive pumpkins instead.
  • Ask your guests for help. Fry said if your family and/or friends ask what they should bring, the best answer is a bottle of wine, so you don't have to worry about buying expensive beverages.
  • Use cloth napkins if you plan on hosting Thanksgiving dinner again next year. Fry said you could find cloth napkins in the dollar section at Target and it will save money over buying paper napkins.
