Report: Colorado drivers among the worst in the country

DENVER – It is the transplants or just the bad roads? We may never be sure, but a new report shows Colorado drivers are among the worst in the nation.

The report collected data from Nationwide Insurance’s Smart telematics program, which installs a device in people’s car to track the way they drive – including hard breaking, fast acceleration and nighttime driving, according to the Denver Post.

The data found Colorado drivers like to speed up all of a sudden, which Nationwide’s vice president told the Post was “an indicator of dangerous behavior.”

According to the Post, the report also shows you’re more likely to find aggressive drivers on Thursdays (who doesn’t want to escape to the weekend by then?) and bad-driving habits at a peak on Sundays.

But there’s a silver lining, Colorado: Drivers in Arizona, New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C., shared in your bad habits.

The data was obtained from 40,000 current drivers in Nationwide’s program, the Post reports.

While Nationwide’s report didn’t rank Colorado drivers and their bad habits, a report by QuoteWizard surely did -- and according to them, Coloradans are the eighth worst drivers in the nation.

The insurance comparison site said it reviewed fatal crashes, total accidents, speeding tickets and DUI citations to determine the best and worst driving states in the country.

When that report came out, the executive director of the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association said Colorado was second in the nation for hail insurance claims and fourth for physical damage claims.

But despite all these bad rankings, a recent survey found Colorado has some of the most polite drivers in the U.S. That’s according to car donation charity Kars4Kids.

The organization put Colorado in seventh place on its list of states with the most courteous drivers
