DENVER -- The Dumb Friends League is looking for dozens of new dog owners after receiving nearly 80 adoptable dogs from an overburdened shelter northern Texas — with dozens more likely on the way.
A northern Texas shelter reached out to the Dumb Friends League and others, including the Humane Society of Missouri, when it failed to find nearby shelters that could help. The first of 79 animals started arriving on Nov. 18, ranging in age from puppies to adults and including many different small, medium and large breeds, said Joan Thielen, communications specialist for the Dumb Friends League.
Rotating teams from the Dumb Friends League will continue to travel to Texas over the next two weeks after a break for Thanksgiving, with the next team scheduled to leave Monday. Each dog will be evaluated and receive necessary vaccinations, treatment and a microchip, then made available for adoption.
The shelter’s goal is to complete the transfers before winter ice storms hit Texas or snow impedes the transport process. Officials are asking for donations to help care for the dogs at ddfl.org or by calling 303-751-5772. Potential pet owners can also view animals available for adoption on the Dumb Friends League’s website.
“We’re expecting another transfer of dogs to come in next week on Thursday and Friday, but we’re just not sure at this point exactly how many,” Thielen said.
