DENVER – If you’re already making plans for your spring or summer weekend trips, you might want to set your sights to the Four Corners this year.
That’s because Lake Nighthorse, Colorado’s newest recreational lake, is now open to the public.
Named after former Colorado senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell, the man-made reservoir offers swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking, and it has been stocked with rainbow trout, brown trout and kokanee salmon, according to our partners The Denver Post.
Construction to recreate the reservoir, which covers more than two square miles, began in 2003 and the lake was filled in 2011, the newspaper reported.
It will be open on weekends through May 13 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) for non-motorized activities including swimming, fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding.
Starting May 15 through November 14, Lake Nighthorse will be open daily, including for approved motorized boats. Hours will vary, so make sure to check the City of Durango website for more information on lake visitation and other regulations.
Daily entry fees will be $8 for cars, $3 for walk-ins.
Lake Nighthorse is located two miles southwest of Durango.
