Home Safety: The Poisons Under Your Nose

and last updated

You spend hours cooking, cleaning and creating your picture perfect home, but did you know it could be making you sick?

In honor of June being National Home Safety Month, here are ways you can stay healthy inside your home.

Mold

Those little brownish-black spots on your wall aren’t dirt, it's mold. And it can cause serious health issues when you breathe it in.

Nearly 500,000 people will die from mold-related deaths this year alone.

You can clean the brown spots with a simple solution of one part chlorine bleach to four parts water. If that doesn't work, get professional help.

Sanitize Your Knives

Remember to properly sanitize your knives or risk getting E.coli or salmonella.

Every year in the U.S, 5,000 people die from E. coli, salmonella and other foodborne illnesses.

Avoid cross-contamination by keeping your utensils and cutting boards separate.

Wash everything thoroughly and rinse items with steaming hot water.

Air Fresheners

If you use air fresheners, experts warn that you shouldn't touch the products, unless it’s non-toxic.

Many air fresheners contain formaldehydes, pesticides and nerve-deadening agents, Ivanhoe News reported. It suggests using natural fresheners like flowers, fruits and other non-toxic products.

Sponge Care

If you’re worried about a dirty sponge, wash it and microwave it for 10 to 15 seconds to kill the remaining bacteria.
