When it comes time to give birth, more and more women are getting very specific about their birth plans.
In this week’s Basics of Babies, our partners at Saint Joseph Hospital say a lot of women want to labor out of the hospital bed, some even walking around until they deliver.
Others look at giving birth in the water, like in a Jacuzzi or shower, but the option gaining the most popularity is delayed cord clamping.
“That’s when the cord is not immediately cut, the baby is placed onto the mother’s abdomen, skin-to-skin contact, and we wait until the cord stops pulsing,” said Connie George, a certified nurse midwife with St. Joseph Hospital.
“This is a much more gentle transition into this world for the newborn,” said George.
Doctors say this method helps the baby’s blood pressure, temperature and heart rate.
We must stress, it’s important to talk to your doctor, or midwife, to see which option is best for you.
