Finding a summer camp for your children can be daunting.
Spots are filling up fast and some camps can break the bank, averaging $400 to $600 per week.
“It’s unbearable. I spend hours at night on the weekends looking at different websites, trying to figure out when it goes online, who can register,” said Brooke Shoenbeck.
We found it difficult to compare all of the different options available, because there isn’t one centralized database.
Program directors at The Y in Denver recommend to start with your price range and type of camp you’re interested in. There are camps ranging from a focus on science and math, sports, outdoor activities or sightseeing around Denver.
The Y said they offer an affordable option with camps averaging $200 per week, with financial assistance to those who qualify while it lasts.
“When you think about what summer has to offer and the amount of experience that young people get, with being able to be engaged in a community with their peers, to be able to be challenged, to be able to have their brains active,” said Jen Martin, Program Director at The Y.
Martin said no matter which camp you choose, it’s important to keep kids active and learning throughout the summer months.
“Research shows that when a student is not engaged in summer learning or physical activity, they do fall behind from their peers and they also are likely to gain more weight,” said Martin.
