DENVER – All Denver Public Schools student lunch debt from last year is expected to be erased by the end of this month, thanks to a local nonprofit and a Colorado businessman.
KidsGiving365 has raised $11,000 since May through a GoFundMe account to settle the DPS student lunch debt, the Denver Post reports.
But they’re not the only ones pitching in.
Grant Barnhill, a parent for a incoming DPS student and founder of Shift Workspaces, will also be donating a sum of $2,910 to help pay off the debt, according to the Post.
Together, they hope to pay off a total of $13,910 to erase the student lunch debt, with KidsGiving365 telling the Post it intends to donate the full amount by Aug. 21.
The Post reports that if the debt is not paid off, some kids would end up getting a cheese sandwich or graham crackers with milk for lunch.
“We are grateful to our community, our students and our business partners for their support. We will be working with them and with federal officials to ensure that every child has the opportunity for breakfast and lunch every day,” a DPS spokesperson told the Post.
