Stand-up desks encouraged at a local school

Posted

How many of you have trouble sitting all day at your desk at work?

School students around Colorado aren’t any different.

That’s why educators at Imagine Charter School in Firestone are trying to raise more money for stand-up desks.

“They're hunched over their desk trying to write and learn and their little spines are just starting to curve and you can see the physiological implications that's going to have on them when they get older," said Kristen Baker, a kindergarten teacher spearheading the plan.

Baker and other parents have noticed that children who have trouble staying still in their desks, learn much better when they can stand for short periods of time while working on their lessons.  Educators tell Denver7 they believe students lose focus while sitting at their desks for too long.  They're hoping this is a fix for those who need to move around.

Denver7 spent the morning in a classroom there and witnessed the children begging the teacher to use the desk, where they can learn alongside four of their peers.

“I like sitting beside my friends because they're my best friends," said Ava Ellis, a kindergarten student.

The desks aren’t cheap.  The single desk in Baker’s room cost nearly $500, but was donated by a company in Louisiana.

The school is trying to raise money to bring more desks to classrooms.

The goal is to have one in every single classroom in the K-8 school.  They realize that it's not appropriate for students to use them all of the time, but urge their use for short periods of time during lessons and even lunch.

“It gives kids a chance to get out some wiggles, to be able to fidget and to move around," said Baker.

The school is trying to raise $12,000.
