DENVER -- A Denver program, making college possible for more than 5,000 Denver Public Schools students, is celebrating a big anniversary this week.

This year marks ten years since the Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) was started, with help from Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper. Hickenlooper helped start the foundation after visiting every DPS school while he was mayor back in 2006. During his visits, he learned about the district’s low graduation rates and high dropout rates.

To mark the foundation’s tenth anniversary, Governor Hickenlooper invited DSF students to his mansion for a luncheon where he discussed the foundation and higher education with the students.

“I do think one of the great things about DSF is a community of scrappers, of kids that you know generally didn’t have a lot of the benefits that, you know, kids down at Cherry Hills have,” said Governor Hickenlooper. “And often have challenges that may be different from mine, but still difficult challenges.”

The Denver Scholarship Foundation will be honoring the governor at its Tenth Anniversary Gala Thursday night, which Denver7 is a proud sponsor of.

Denver7’s Anne Trujillo will be there as the emcee.
