DENVER – Colorado is getting millions of dollars to help preserve its past and invest in its future.
The History Colorado State Historical Fund (SHF) is awarding a total of $4,568,138 in historic preservation grants to projects across the state.
The grants will provide essential funding for projects across Colorado, such as historic structure assessments, education program, archeological projects, and physical work to preserve their historic resources and have a significant economic impact, according to a History Colorado spokesperson.
Here’s a breakdown of what the $4.5 million will do to preserve our state:
1. Argo Tunnel and Mill (Idaho Springs): $15,436 for construction documents to plan for the preservation of this mining boom facility, a critical part of the Idaho Springs viewshed. History Colorado officials said the site will be a significant addition to the city’s heritage tourism resources.
2. Denver and Rio Grande Antonito Depot (Antonito): $74,806 will be used for exterior rehabilitation of one of Colorado’s most endangered places, as listed by Colorado Preservenation, Inc.
3. Haynie Site (Cortez): A total of $199,991 will go for the Northern Chaco Outliers Project analysis of the largest concentration of great houses in Colorado. History Colorado officials said the work done at the Haynie stie will “significantly contribute to the understanding of Colorado’s archaeological history.”
4. Huerfano County Courthouse and Jail (Walsenburg): $200,000 will go toward full masonry restoration on the east elevation and tower.
5. Reynolds Ranch/Hagen Farmhouse/Twin Oaks Ranch (Colorado Springs): $108,389 will go toward the second phase exterior restoration and roof replacement of the site. History Colorado officials say the farmhouse will eventually feature interpretative signage, be open to tours and be available as an event space.
6. San Juan County Hospital (Silverton): A total of $199,360 will be used to complete the interior restoration and rehabilitation of the upper levels of Silverton’ only public health facility.
7. World’s Wonder View Tower (Genoa): The amount of $14,412 will be used for a historic structure assessment of this iconic and historic attraction. This is just the initial phase of a comprehensive restoration plan, according to History Colorado officials.
