The grates that rest over top of the burners on your gas stove are one of those surfaces that love to attract grime yet are infuriating to clean. Popping them into the dishwasher is an option, and scrubbing them is a serious pain in the elbow, but neither of those options seem to restore them to beauty.

As you can imagine, there are tons of tips and hacks online that promise a cleaner stove with less work, and we are major fans of one trick that we found on YouTube.

YouTuber DIY Super Mom posted a 2-minute clip revealing her ingenious method for cleaning those stubborn grates all the way back in 2014, and the advice still holds up all these years later. The best part of her hack is that it requires no intense scrubbing and instead lets time handle the hard work. It just requires a little patience, some freezer bags and a spray bottle filled with ammonia.

Check out the full tutorial below:

In the video, you can see that the burner grates she’s using are pretty filthy, which makes it seem like a fantasy that she’ll ever get them totally clean. That’s what makes the ease with which she pulls it off so impressive!

DIY Super Mom removes the dirty grates and puts each of them into a freezer bag of their own. She then liberally sprays the grates with the ammonia while it’s inside the bag. The key word is liberally, because you can see she really douses those things before sealing the bag.

After she’s closed the bag — trapping that dizzying ammonia scent inside — she flips the grate onto its top and leaves it resting overnight, so the chemical is coming into direct contact with the side that is visible on your stove. After they’ve sat all night, she opens the bag and lightly wipes off the surface of the soaked grate (while wearing cleaning gloves, of course), and it quickly looks good as new.

It’s easy to see why the clip has more than 3.2 million views since it went up!

Now that your grates are clean, all you have to do now is get the caked-on splatters off your actual stovetop surface (joy!).
