A rescue cat has ended up with a very famous owner, and it’s all because of its name. Because who better to adopt a cat named Dennis Quaid than Dennis Quaid himself? The “Parent Trap” star told Virginia news station WSLS that he was “out to save all the Dennis Quaids of the world.”

This particular Dennis Quaid (the cat, not the actor) is 6 years old, weighs 13.81 lbs and cost $79, according to People. “I may not live up to my dramatic and artistic actor namesake, I’d rather watch his movies with you curled up on the couch,” read the cat’s description on the Lynchburg Humane Society website when the handsome black kitty was still up for adoption.

After 10 News featured the feline Dennis Quaid on a newscast last week, it got everyone talking. When Quaid himself heard about the cat, he decided it would make a great adoption story – and tie in with the recent launch of his pet podcast, The Pet Show, through his company Audio Up.

Initially, shelter staff (one of whom is holding Dennis Quaid the cat in the Facebook post below) thought they were being pranked.

“I was like there is no way this is real, like, someone is pranking us,” Danielle Ulmer, Lynchburg Humane Society’s adoption center manager, told WSLS.

But when Quaid jumped on a Zoom call with the shelter and his “Pet Show” co-host Jimmy Jellinek, they realized Dennis Quaid the cat’s life was about to change forever.

“Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites,” Quaid joked when he officially adopted the cat — who was decked out in a white bow tie for the occasion when Jellinek picked him up at the shelter:

If you’re wondering how Dennis the cat got the name in the first place, Lynchburg Humane Society hinted to WSLS that there’s a big Dennis Quaid fan on staff.

“We take in about 4,000 animals a year, so we really just try to come up with creative names and just not have the same name twice,” said Danielle Ulmer, the adoption center manager. “A lot of times if we watch a good movie or are super obsessed with this book or this actor or something like that, we’ll just throw the names out there just to try to get more creative.”

We’re sure Dennis Quaid will be happy in its forever home … with Dennis Quaid!
