Have you ever wanted to take an extended break from your everyday life and escape to a tropical locale for awhile? Now may be your chance, thanks to a new partnership between Airbnb and the Bahamas National Trust, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting national parks in the Caribbean country.

The Bahamas Sabbatical offers five participants the opportunity to live and work on the Bahamas islands of Andros, Exuma and Eleuthera during the months of April and May 2020. Participants will work to restore the islands after the devastation of several hurricanes. They will team up with experts to work in the areas of agriculture, ethical fishingand coral reef revitalization.

In Andros, they will focus on creating a coral reef restoration program in North and South Marine Parks. In Exuma, they will replicate the Exumas Cays Land and Sea Park ecosystem, including curbing invasive species such as the red lionfish as well as engaging in conch conservation, traditional boat building and sailing. They’ll also learn about the culinary uses of local seafood and produce. In Eleuthera, they will farm pineapples, harvest sea salt and establish a bush team farm while researching native species.

“The Bahamas is open for business and while we work to restore parts of the archipelago devastated by Hurricane Dorian, the vast majority is ready for visitors,” Eric Carey, executive director of the Bahamas National Trust, said in a statement. “Partnering with Airbnb is an incredible opportunity to help further preserve our culture and resources and share our diverse country and the Bahamian way of life with the world.”

All applicants must be age 18 and older and able to live in the Bahamas for the duration of April and May 2020. Applications are open until February 18, 2020. Only applicants from certain countries, including the United States, are eligible to apply.

Up to 50 applicants will be selected from the original pool of applicants to participate in one or more rounds of individual phone or video conference interviews. From there, the final five, as well as five “reserve” participants, will be chosen. See the complete rules and apply here; you’ll need to speak conversational English, have an Airbnb account and a passport, and be in good enough physical condition to participate in activities such as swimming.

Doesn’t this sound like a great way to refresh while you make a difference? Good luck!
