Working with young people keeps volunteer young

Posted

Lovey Shipp says her soul is happy when she is around kids and volunteering. In fact, she says while her knees are 88 years old, her heart is 16.

For more than 20 years she has been working with students at involved with Father Woody Service Projects at Regis University, but her work with Father Woody goes back years before that.

“It’s the right thing to do as Father Woody would say,” Shipp told Denver7. “We know it’s the right thing. My favorite soul is happy when I’m with these kids.”

Shipp is one of 20 volunteers being honored with a US Bank gift card through the Making Things Possible program on Denver7 this month.

She says volunteering is addictive.

“It kinda grows on you like a fungus,” Shipp said. “The more you give the more you want to give. And what you give away is what you keep.”

Shipp says volunteering is a small price to pay for our time here on earth.

“Service is the rent you pay for the space you take up. I’ve always said that. When you know your rent is paid, it’s a good feeling. I’m happy all the time. All the time.”

The Father Woody Service Projects at Regis University are funded in part by the Daniels Fund.  For more information, visit danielsfund.org
