If you still go to a Sears or Kmart store near you for home or garden goods, there’s a good chance you may not be able to for much longer. The company that owns the stores announced on Nov. 7 that a third of them will close in early 2020.
Transform Holdco, the parent company of the two stores, says 96 more Sears and Kmart stores will be closing by February. In a press release, the company says 51 Sears stores and 45 Kmart stores will shutter.
That leaves just 182 Sears and Kmart stores remaining after hundreds of other locations closed in the past few years.
Transform Holdco purchased the assets of the Sears Holdings Corporation in February after the company was bought out of bankruptcy for $5.2 billion. According to Business Insider, the retailer had nearly 2,000 stores as recently as 2013, meaning around 1,818 stores have closed in just six years.
Over the past 15 years, more than 3,500 Sears and Kmart stores have shuttered, USA Today reported.
“We will continue to evaluate our Sears and Kmart footprint, consistent with our overall retail and service strategy,” Transform Holdco said in the press release. “We will endeavor to create and deliver value through a strategic combination of our better performing retail stores and our service businesses, brands and other assets, and expect to realize a significant return on our extensive portfolio of owned and leased real estate.”
If you live near one of the stores closing, liquidation sales are expected to begin Dec. 2, after Black Friday sales, so keep an eye out for some deals.
