JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. – Two 18-year-old men are facing arson charges for setting off fireworks that ignited a wildfire that burned several acres, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday.
Andrew Askins and Riley Costello were booked into jail on charges of second-degree arson in connection to the North Turkey Creek Fire. Jefferson County is currently under a temporary fire ban and deputies said one of the provisions of that ban is a restriction on the use of all fireworks.
The North Turkey Creek Fire burned seven acres near Highway 285 and Turkey Creek Road Wednesday afternoon. Officials said the fire destroyed an outbuilding, a storage unit and two vehicles. There were no reports of injuries.
Six different fire agencies responded to the fire with 15 trucks and 34 firefighters.
