A 9-year-old Colorado boy who was shot in the head by his 8-year-old brother has died, Trinidad Police say.
The two boys were in a parked car at a gas station in Trinidad on Jan. 4 and found a loaded handgun in the vehicle, police said.
"While handling the gun, it discharged, striking the 9-year-old in the head," police stated.
A family friend, James Howard, was caring for the boys while their parents attended a medical appointment. Howard, 63, is an employee of the Sparks Natural Gas station and was working on a pump at the time of the accident, police said.
The older boy was rushed to Mt. San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad and then flown via Flight for Life to Children's Hospital Colorado in Aurora.
The boy was removed from life support on Sunday and died that afternoon.
No arrests have been made at this time.
