AURORA, Colo. -- A few weeks ago, 13-year-old Issa Shabazz entered the eighth grade.

His mother, Renee Jones, says that for the past year, her son has gotten used to riding the light rail to get back and forth from both his parent's homes.

On Sunday afternoon, he went to visit his father again like he had many times before. This time, Jones says she got a call from her son about 20 minutes after he had left her home.

"And he was just crying on the phone, I couldn’t really understand what he was saying," Jones said.

Seconds before that call, Shabazz says he was attacked while waiting for the light rail at the Florida Station.

"I was standing up and I was just on my skateboard and when he kicked me I fell to the ground. I looked at him and he had like a rude, like a mad face just staring at me, and when I was on the floor, he took my skateboard and walked away for two seconds and then looked back at me and threw the skateboard at me," the boy told Denver7.

Shabazz says a train pulled into the station and he ran on board to get to safety. He says the man stayed on the platform.

After calling his mom, she picked him up at a station near her home and took him to Medical Center of Aurora. After examining her son, she says doctors told her he had soft tissue damage on the back of his neck.

Aurora Police says they are investigating and will be going through the surveillance video from the platform.
