Denver7 | Your Voice took a trip to Windsor to hear what's on community members' minds now.
What is Denver7 | Your Voice? Read about the project here

I've been in Windsor for 14 years, and when we drove into the town, we knew it was where we wanted to be, Cline said.

George and Carrie Buchholz, who moved from California to start a family, say Windsors lifestyle was exactly what they were looking for.

We're expecting our first right now, actually, Carrie said. Compared to where we came from, it's just really great people and a lot of great things to do that I think I would have loved growing up. So, it's the kind of thing we want to have for our kids.

Residents and local business owners often point to Windsors connection to nature, community spirit and thriving small business scene as defining features.

My family really loves the small town atmosphere, but at the same time, we have access to go to a Rockies game or something that's going on in Denver, but still enjoy the small-town, outdoor feel, Reece Gliko, store manager at Eshs Grocery Market, said.

Eshs draws customers from across northern Colorado and even Wyoming by offering unique products and lower prices than larger competitors. Gliko says the arrival of big retailers isn't a concern.

We feel like we're more a complimentary relationship with those big box stores, because you get such a unique variety of things here, and the business model is so different from their's, it's not necessarily seen as a threat, Gliko said.

Windsor is a smaller community. I mean, it's growing a lot. Loveland used to be that way. Used to be small, but it just exploded, Esther Quinonez said. Quinonez, and her husband Albert, both work in Windsor.

As word spreads about Windsors lifestyle, some residents note changes.

It's grown a lot. There's a lot more traffic, there's a lot more people, but I think it's good, added resident Corbin Brier.

Mayor Cline acknowledges that rapid growth presents challenges.

Traffic is one of them, you know, maintaining our infrastructure, but we know that those people that want that small-town feel a lot of people want the convenience of different restaurants or some of the box stores, she said.

For longtime residents, theres hope that future growth will preserve Windsors identity.

I just hope that it keeps the hometown feel and the community, because everybody comes together when something happens, Brier said.

Carrie Buchholz voiced support for local businesses: I hope that it continues to be a small-business-friendly place where people don't feel overwhelmed by fees and regulations.

For now, Windsors community appears committed to maintaining its safe, small-town heart. Town leaders say they will continue listening to residents concerns as the area prepares for its next chapter of growth.

This story was reported on-air by a journalist and has been converted to this platform with the assistance of AI. At Chicken Salad Chick in Johnstown, its more than a lunchtime rush it's neighbors doing life over a bite to eat.

We really pride ourselves on being a part of the community, said owner Jessica Zumbrun.

Zumbrun and her husband own the Chicken Salad Chick locations in Greeley, Windsor, and Johnstown, and are now taking that ethos to a new level. They are offering free kids meals to anyone affected by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding freeze, no questions asked.

Since students already have access to free breakfast and lunch at school, the hope is to help fill the dinnertime gap for families who will lose access to their SNAP benefits on Nov. 1.

We posted on Monday, and we have never seen such a response between all of our stores, she said. We served, I think it was eight meals right away that came through in Greeley.

Over at the Food Bank for Larimer County, volunteers are also doing their part to pay it forward.

Just feeling like I'm doing a little something to help with, you know, help people that are having a hard time, Charlice Wenger told Denver7.

Wenger and the rest of the volunteers at the Loveland Fresh Food Share Market have their work cut out for them. The line was out the door when Denver7 crews were there Wednesday afternoon.

The food bank said the number of households that have signed up for the service so far this month is more than triple the average, going from 150 new signups to 478 in October.

It is going to be devastating to those families, and so it is hard to prepare, but we're doing what we can, said Food Bank for Larimer County CEO Amy Pezzani.

Pezzani told Denver7 the food bank is pre-purchasing more food, extending open shopping hours, and offering up to $100,000 in emergency food grants to their partners ahead of the freeze.

More than 600,000 Coloradans are expected to lose their food benefits on Saturday.

On Wednesday afternoon, Colorado Democratic Congressman Joe Neguse blamed Republicans for these lost SNAP benefits. Neguse said the Trump administration has the power to release these benefits, but won't.

It is outrageous that the Trump administration can come up with $40 billion to bail out Argentina and refuses to spend the money that Congress has appropriated to feed hungry families in America," said Neguse.

Republicans, on the other hand, blame Democrats for the shutdown.

Colorado is part of a 25-state lawsuit against the Trump administration over SNAP benefits.

With massive impacts ahead, food banks across the state are calling for a stop to the shutdown.

As much we, as folks who are in the charitable food system, are here to help, and we do this every day, we cannot make up for the loss of $120 million in benefits in just a couple of weeks. It's really impossible, said Pezzani. What I hope to see is that our lawmakers make some decisions that will change this trajectory, because this is a place nobody in America should be.

For now, the northern Colorado community will continue to find creative ways to help each other get by. The staff at Chicken Salad Chick is preparing extra food every day to get ready for the increase in need.

It's not a lot, but we're really hoping that other businesses, if they have the ability to do that, they're able to step forward and maybe offer some assistance as well, said Zumbrun.

Coloradans in need of food assistance can check out the following resources below:
Food Bank of the Rockies (several counties) Arapahoe County Douglas County Weld County Larimer County
The governors office suggested Coloradans call 211 or (866) 760-5489 or visit the 211 Colorado website. Taking a closer look at the Denver metro area, there have been three locations where a measles exposure was possible in the last week.

The incubation period for measles is about 7 days to 21 days, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.
As measles cases increase in Colorado, Denver7 asked health officials what to do if you were exposedWhere have people been exposed recently?
In Windsor, people may have been exposed at the King Soopers located at 1520 Main St. on Saturday, May 31, between 10:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. According to state health department officials, they should be on the lookout for symptoms until June 21.

In Denver, the individual may have exposed shoppers and staff at the Trader Joes located at 661 Logan St. in Denvers Capitol Hill neighborhood on Thursday, May 29, between 9:30-11:40 a.m. They should be looking for symptoms until June 19.

And in Glendale, the individual may have exposed people at the Target located at 4301 E. Virginia Ave. on Monday, June 2 from 9:20-11:50 p.m. They should be keeping an eye out for symptoms until June 23.
How to tell the difference between allergies or the beginning stages of measles infection
"The typical symptoms would start with fever, cough, red, watery eyes, runny nose, that's usually the beginnings of it, and followed, on average, for three to four days later with a rash. And the typical rash starts on the head and neck and then spreads down over the rest of the body," said Bob Belknap, director of the Public Health Institute at Denver Health.

While some of the early on symptoms could be mistaken for allergies, Belknap told Denver7 a hint might be if you typically don't experience those types of allergies and if you're not vaccinated against the measles.

Denver7 has been closely following confirmed cases of measles in Colorado amid a multi-state outbreak of the virus in the U.S. this year. We asked Belknap, how that could happen?

"I think something we have known for a while is that breakthrough cases can happen in people who have been vaccinated. They happen when there's been really a pretty significant exposure to someone who is sick, and that's what we're seeing in this instance," he said. "It was people who were exposed over a very long international flight, or some folks who were exposed in a fairly packed indoor setting at DIA. In some sense, the fact that we haven't seen more cases as a result of that exposure speaks to the effectiveness of the vaccinations."

For anyone who has been to any of the possible exposure locations, Belknap said no one is truly in the clear until 21 days have passed without any symptoms.

"People are not going to be infectious to others if they don't have symptoms. It's really if someone begins to develop symptoms, then that's the point at which, if they have measles, they could be contagious," he said.

If you believe you could be infected with measles, call your healthcare provider first. Do not show up at an appointment without notifying them of the possibility of a measles, so they can coordinate the best way to avoid any exposure with others.

If they made progress, we wouldn't be having this conversation," Windsor Town Manager Shane Hale told Denver7 Tuesday.

Hale said issues with lighting, inadequate fencing around bodies of water, and sanitation issues in restrooms weren't addressed, forcing the town to deny the TCO renewal for the three facilities.

"We have to err on the side of public safety," said Hale.

Tanner Hayes, whose son plays soccer at Future Legends, appreciates the town's focus on safety but is concerned about the implications for youth sports.

"It was really awesome to be able to have the indoor facilities especially in spring sports when the weather as everyone knows in Colorado can be very adverse and unpredictable," said Hayes.

He said without the sports dome in use, it will force teams to find other indoor solutions in northern Colorado, where options are few and far between.

"Were going to have to be creative and come up with space so they can all practice and compete," Hayes said.

Jeff Katofsky, the owner of Future Legends Sports Complex, issued a statement defending the facility's safety.

"Future Legends is safe. By doing so and continuing renewing those certificates for close to two and a half years, the Town of Windsor, the Town continue to certify the safety of those areas at Future Legends," Katofsky said. "Nothing has changed, other than progress and improvements, for almost 2 and 12 years. Except now the Town of Windsor, for reasons that are subject to litigation, has changed its mind."
Read Katofsky's full statement below
Despite the ongoing disagreement regarding the conditions of the complex, Hale remains optimistic about its potential.

"I think it has a lot of potential for attraction. It just hasn't lived up to that potential yet," Hale said. Orange fencing surrounds the swim beach at Windsor Lake after yet another toxic algae bloom was recorded there. The closure will last through the rest of the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

"I don't even really bring [my daughter] over here to swim that much because we never know if the levels are safe or certain things," said Alan Green.

Signs are posted around parts of the lake stating there should be no swimming and pets should also stay out of the water.

"It seems like it happens probably four times a year," Green said.

Other locals said it seems to be happening more and more often.

"We never noticed that much algae," said Robert Etl, who grew up swimming and water skiing in the lake decades ago. And they get a genuine chuckle out of every sassy joke she makes.

Like when asked, "what brought you to Colorado?" Ravithis retorts, "I was born in Milliken. That's in Colorado, so that's how I got here."

Her care team's admiration and affection drove members of the assisted living center to host a special We Honor Veterans ceremony for Ravithis at the beginning of Women's History Month a celebration she earned through her service in the United States Army, United States Marine Corps and Army National Guard.

The 91-year-old's eyes are bright, and she hones in on whomever she's talking with intently.

That spark is especially visible as Ravithis recounts her initial plans to go to college to become a nurse. But after talking with military recruiters, she joined the Army.

When Ravithis went to tell her parents, she playfully asked them to guess what she did that day.

"They never knew what I was gonna do or what I was going to get into," Ravithis said.

But she followed in her father's footsteps in the Army.

Ravithis blazed a trail through the communications department, learning every station until she eventually became a manager.

In that role, Ravithis had no qualms about standing up for the women she oversaw. She said a lieutenant once gave one of Ravithis' subordinates a hard time for spending too long in the bathroom.

Ravithis asked, "Well, why were you longer?" And the woman answered, "I had to change my Tampax."

Ravithis was not afraid to assert her authority.

"I said, 'the next time you chew out one of my operators, I'm taking you to the top the next time.' I said, 'you don't bother my people. You don't talk to my people.'"

She seems just as confident in herself decades later.

"You know, if you speak up, and you're strong about what you say, you know, they listen," Ravithis said.

After the Army, Ravithis then transitioned to the United States Marines a time she is particularly fond of.

"I loved the Marine Corps, because they were rough, tough. And I enjoyed that very, very much," Ravithis said.

She served in law enforcement for the Marines before becoming one of the first women to serve in the Colorado Army National Guard when she joined in 1972.

Ravithis couldnt attend her first training camp because there were no womens facilities.

She said she was only in the Colorado Army National Guard for a few weeks before transferring to the California National Guard.

But she returned back to Colorado after her service there.

Beyond her military service, friend and caregiver Kim Rutten also added, Ravithis served with the American Red Cross during September 11.

"She has this big old picture with all the firefighters and stuff saying thank you for the help," Rutten said.

Rutten and another one of Ravithis' friends from church shared how much they admire her and all she's done to pave the way for women veterans.

But on a personal level, Rutten's favorite thing about Ravithis?

"Her spirit. Her love. And just how much she cares about everybody. She's kind of made her way here taking care of people, too. You know, there's a little lady that was sitting by herself and she's like, 'No, you're not doing that. I'm taking care of you.' So she has that in her heart, too," Rutten said.

While Ravithis was only married for seven years and doesn't have any children of her own, Rutten has gladly welcomed her into her own family.

"My kids love her and the grandkids love her. And she's a big part of all of our lives," Rutten said.

She's traveled across the country with Ravithis for years to attend Womens Army Corps Veterans Association Conventions. And they're not slowing down. The duo plans to attend this year's assembly in Baltimore, Maryland in August, demonstrating the power women hold when they stick together.

The driver and one passenger were taken to the hospital. The six other juveniles were released to their parents at the crash scene, according to the Windsor Police Department.

But in Tami DePalma's case, she didn't get to take her son home.

At only 17, Dominic DePalma had his entire life ahead of him. Tami said her son loved to play soccer and video games, and excelled at math.

On July 28, 2022, Tami said her son left the house and never came back.

"I got a phone call from one of his friends that said 'You need to get to the hospital, something happened,'" Tami remembered. When you walk into a situation like that you think you're walking into, okay, what are we going to do to save his life? But we didn't realize that's not what we were there for.

Dominic passed away just hours after the crash. His mother said her son was killed by an impaired driver.

There were five boys [in the car]. One of them had been drinking and chose to drive," Tami said. He ran a red light, and they were hit by a truck. A large truck.

Dominic was in the backseat of the car, according to his mother.

You don't really heal from the death of a child. You just learn how to live your life and move ahead, even though the sadness is inside of you," Tami said.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reports that, as of September, 55 teen drivers have died on the road this year. That's a 77% increase over the same time period last year. The number of deadly crashes involving teens has also increased by 56% when compared to last year.

Tami spoke with Denver7 from a bench in Broomfield in the parking lot where Dominic had left his car on the day he died. Tami said the lot is used frequently as a meeting spot for teenagers who then carpool to their next location. That's why she worked to get the bench installed with Dominic's name on it- to serve as a reminder to teens before they get into a car or get behind the wheel.

We were pretty emphatic on making sure that this bench stayed in a place that was very prominent, where those kids would be able to see this when they're gathering for the night, making their choices about what they're going to do that night," Tami said. I hope to at least start the spread of a message that any amount of drinking and driving isn't okay, not just for kids, but with adults as well.

Tami firmly believes adults should lead by example when it comes to combating dangerous teen driving.

"Kids are going to do what their parents do, so let's make sure we're having designated drivers and watching what we do," Tami said. I don't really know how to make a change besides talk to hordes of people and say 'it can happen to you.'

Sam Sarno, the driver, took a plea deal in the case and was sentenced to 120 days of work release, 80 hours of community service, and two years of probation, according to court records.

The DePalmas have a scholarship in Dominic's honor that aims to find and support children and teens who love soccer as much as their son did and an ambition to play.
Broomfield mother of teen killed in DUI crash speaks out

A man was sentenced to 39 years in prison for killing a man at a Loveland intersection in 2015, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office announced.

William Connole, 65, was fatally shot around 10:45 p.m. on June 3, 2015, while he was standing at the intersection of East 1st Street and North St. Louis Avenue.

Roughly 15 minutes prior, someone fired shots at a motorcyclist near the intersection of Denver Drive and East 18th Street in Loveland. The rider was not injured, according to the sheriff's office.

The two shootings were turned over to the Northern Colorado Shooting Task Force at the request of then-Loveland Police Chief Luke Hecker, the sheriff's office said. The task force was created to investigate two more similar shootings that happened in April and May 2015.

Two years and eight months later, authorities identified Christopher David Parker as a suspect in the June 2015 shootings, according to the sheriff's office. Authorities said the shootings of Connole and the motorcyclist were linked by forensic evidence but were not linked to the other shootings.

Parker was arrested on March 13, 2018, and booked into the Larimer County Jail.

He plead guilty to second-degree murder and faced a sentence between 16 to 40 years in prison, according to the sheriff's office. Judge Susan Blanco on Monday more than eight years after Connole's death sentenced Parker to 39 years in prison.

This outcome delivers justice to a man who terrorized our community, but the irreparable harm he caused can never be reversed, said Sheriff John Feyen in a statement. The name of this murderer is not worth repeating, but Mr. Connoles legacy will live on here in Larimer County as we remember the positive impact he made on all who knew him.

Authorities are asking for the public's help in solving the two similar shootings that happened in April and May 2015.

Cori Romero was shot in the neck around 11:15 p.m. on April 22, 2015, while she was driving. At the time, she was merging onto southbound Interstate 25 from Harmony Road in Larimer County. Romero survived her injuries, according to the sheriff's office.

John Jacoby was shot and killed around 10:15 a.m. on May 18, 2015, while he was riding his bicycle near the intersection of Weld County Road 15 and Weld County Road 72 in Windsor, the sheriff's office said.

Anyone with information about the two shootings is asked to call 970-498-5595 or email taskforce@larimer.org.
