Jake Arnold has lived in Colorado all his life, yet his recent move to the Ken Caryl foothills has brought in new terrain and new fears.

Being that we are not in a fire zone, but very close to one, it's just something we want to take care of, Arnold said. I've got a family in there, and we've got a lot of things to worry about.

One internet search later, Arnold found Road Home Exteriors. The roofing and siding company recently launched the Harden Your Home Program.

Its a free 28-point assessment designed to walk homeowners through making their properties more fire-resistant by looking at things like siding, vents and vegetation.

Gaps in a homes roofing, siding or vents can create entry points for embers during a wildfire, according to Road Home Exteriors co-founder Leo Dunn.

Last year was a pretty big year for Colorado regarding fire mitigation, Dunn said. We have the Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code, along with House Bill 1182, both dealing with fire mitigation for homeowners.

Dunn said the changes have sparked a flood of questions from homeowners trying to make sense of these changes and what it means to keep their homes safe from wildfire.

We felt like there were a lot of information gaps for homeowners that were looking to harden their homes, Dunn said. We see it as our duty to provide that information.

The CWRC sets rules for fire-resistant building materials and landscaping for new construction or renovations in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) areas places where development meets wildfire-prone terrain.

Counties across Colorado, including Jefferson County, are updating their own versions of their local wildfire resiliency code to meet state standards. Jefferson County, for instance, is considering expanding its current WUI boundaries past the mountains and into places like Ken Caryl, which is currently not considered a fire zone.

For that reason, Dunn told Denver7, each assessment is highly personalized factoring in a homeowner's proximity to the WUI and the specific fire-resistance rules that apply where they live.

HB 1182, which goes into effect this July, will require insurers to incorporate mitigation efforts into a homeowners rates. Dunn said homeowners who complete the program will have documentation to bring to their insurance companies but worries the law wont always guarantee lower rates for homeowners despite their efforts.

Hopefully these changes will provide some sort of discount to insurance," he said. "But that is something that needs to be communicated, and we cannot guarantee that as part of this program.

Denver7 got a firsthand look at the assessment process as Arnold's home was put to the test. The verdict: his home's roofing and deck materials all meet Class A fire ratings, but the wood composite siding is susceptible to fire.

It was an eye-opening experience, said Arnold. I'll probably be looking at [replacing] the siding, have them look at my gutters as well.

The importance of fire mitigation was even more apparent as we stood outside on this 70 degree February day.

We're all in this neighborhood together, said Arnold. What [my neighbors] do [to strengthen their homes] helps me, and vice versa.

Homeowners in the Denver metro area and across Colorado staring down massive increases in property taxes have a limited window to appeal property valuations as the deadline to protest is quickly approaching.

Based on state statute, county assessors in Colorado revalue every residential and commercial property based upon what theyre worth as of June 30 of every even-numbered year.

In late April, nine metro Denver assessors came together to warn of an "historic" bump in home values that could lead to homeowners paying significantly more taxes in 2024.

At the beginning of May, as property valuations became available, reality struck many homeowners who have been shocked by their new appraisals.

Many experts across the political spectrum are anything but surprised.

Scott Wasserman, president of the Bell Policy Center, a left-leaning policy organization, points to several key factors impacting property appraisals in Colorado in a historic fashion, beginning with the repeal of the Gallagher amendment in 2020.

From 1982 until 2020, when Coloradans residential home values went up, the assessment rate went down and the business side, the non-residential side, would go up to compensate, Wasserman said.

When we got rid of the Gallagher amendment in 2020, that meant that when residential home values go up, so will residential property values, he added.

And they have.

In some cases, residential property values in the Denver region have skyrocketed between 35 and 45%, according to a report from Denver metro assessors.

Property owners in mountain communities have seen an even higher increase in valuations, in some cases jumping 60 to 80%.

Before becoming the representative for House District 45, State Rep. Lisa Frizell was the Douglas County Assessor. The Republican lawmaker was in the assessor's office back in 2009 during the Great Recession and told Denver7 she is worried about Coloradans paying property taxes on a depreciating home.

"Colorado's property tax policy is really geared for appreciating values because we value tax in arrears," Rep. Frizell said. "So you get your notice in May, looking backward, and usually you're like, you know, while my home is actually worth more than that in an appreciating market, in a depreciating market, you're paying taxes on a value that literally no longer exists. And that's devastating for homeowners and renters."

Homeowners have been paying taxes based upon June 2020 home values, which was during the pandemic when home prices were lower. This time around, property assessments have been calculated using home values in June 2022, when home prices were close to peaking in Colorado.

With no Gallagher Amendment available to offer a reprieve for homeowners, frustrated property owners and experts worry the big jump could lead to a crisis if nothing is done.

Gov. Jared Polis and legislators have shared a proposed change that, if adopted by lawmakers and voters in November, would allow taxpayers to deduct $40,000 from their appraised value and would slightly decrease the tax rate from the current 6.75% to 6.7%.

Here's a hypothetical example of what that could mean for taxpayers, from Denver7 reporter Rob Harris.

Let's say in June 2020, a home in Douglas County was valued at $545,000. Then in June 2022, the estimated property valuation jumped to $780,000 an eye-opening 43% increase. That means the hypothetical homeowner in Douglas County would be looking at a $2,152 tax increase under Colorado law.

Allowing a homeowner to deduct $40,000 from their appraised value would also decrease the tax rate, slightly decreasing the pain leaving them owing $1,858 in property tax.

In this case, under the proposed legislative change, the taxpayer would be looking at saving around $300.

While politicians work on finding relief for worried homeowners, many readers and viewers have asked Denver7 to follow up on what property tax relief options are available. Weve also received questions about how to file an appeal on your Colorado property assessment.

While the process to appeal property values is similar no matter where your home is located in Colorado, this story will give homeowners property tax appeal details specific to Denver metro counties.

Well also share contact information for each office of the county assessor in Colorado including phone numbers, plus more details about each countys assessors specific process.

First, no matter where you call home in Colorado, theres one deadline to protest your property values: June 8, 2023.

The window to file an appeal on property assessments opened on May 1 and homeowners have less than three weeks to file an appeal in Colorado.

Overall, there are resources available to help property owners who generally have three options when protesting property values. Filing an appeal online with most assessor offices is generally a straightforward process with supporting FAQs often available. Assessor websites allow property owners to search property information, find mill levy information and search interactive maps showing property value changes in the Denver metro area.

An online form can be printed and mailed to the county assessors office or can be downloaded and emailed.

Completed property value protest forms can also be delivered in-person. In Denver, appeals can be dropped off at the Assessment Division inside the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Office Building at 201 W. Colfax Avenue.

Denver also has a protest phone line at 720-913-4164 for people with questions about filing an appeal.

Some counties also have drop box locations to deliver appeal documents. Arapahoe County lists five locations, two of which are in Aurora. Scroll down to find drop box locations across the metro.

Denver7 spoke to several county assessors in the state about how to best prepare a protest and what helps homeowners file a successful appeal.

The reasons to appeal what is in the appraisal generally falls into two categories: a discrepancy with the physical characteristics of the property and proof that similar properties have actually sold for less than what is shown in the assessors valuation.

Denvers county assessor offers this advice: First, review your statement and ensure the basic numbers are correct, then consider property issues the county assessor might not be aware of.

Many property owners know their properties quite well, certainly better than the assessors do. We can't visit each and every property every two years, so we do rely on a bit of collaboration with the property owner, said Denver County Assessor Keith Erffmeyer. Any appeal we would look for, you know, reasoning as to why that particular property owner feels the value is excessive.

An early look at numbers show around 3,700 property owners had so far appealed their valuations in 2023, according to numbers provided this week to Denver7 by the assessor's office in Denver.

While there were only 8,716 total appeals during the last appraisal period in 2021, the assessor's office said 2019 was a more typical year when the the city and county of Denver received 13,038 appeals. That number included appeals from residential, commercial and property owners.

The assessor's office in Denver said it expected to see the majority of appeals during the week leading up to June 8.

Over in Arapahoe County, assessor PK Kaiser recently told Denver7 his office had seen a minimum amount of property owners hand-delivering appeals with most valuation protests coming in online.

Arapahoe County residents now receive a QR code with their property valuation that can help save time when drafting an appeal.

"When our homeowners are appealing their values, we want them to make sure that they provide us very quantitative information," Kaiser said. They can reach to the property page, where we put the five houses we compare their house with and see if those houses are correctly described there. If they are not OK with that, they can ask us and we will provide the complete list of the houses sold in their neighborhood.

Remember, the proposed valuations are based upon the market in June 2022, not what your home is currently valued at by searching on real estate home websites like Redfin and Zillow.

We have accurate information about your house and about the neighborhood and county as a whole, Kaiser said. We are happy to help online, in person, by mail, phone, fax, email, by video conference. Any possible opportunity at this point, we are keeping it open for our homeowners."

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER A PROPERTY TAX APPEAL IS DENIED?

There are several steps available to Colorado property and homeowners if a protest has been rejected by the county assessor's office. Once a notice of determination is received, a property owner can then appeal the valuation to the county's Board of Equalization.

Before deciding to take a property tax assessment appeal to the district court, property owners in Colorado can file an appeal before the Board of Assessement Appeals, which is a state-level government board.

Arbitration is another step that can help settle a disagreement between homeowners and the county, but an arbitrator's decision is final, according to the Colorado Judicial Branch.

Adams County saw a median increase in residential property valuations of around 38% and a 42% change in general commercial valuations.

County Deputy Assessor Tom Swingle said in a release: Adams County experienced significant increases in value reflecting the strong economic conditions across the Denver Metro area. The Assessors Office encourages property owners to review their accounts online to make sure the details of their property are listed correctly.

Property owners can file a notice of valuation online appeal in Adams County at this link using the account number found at the top left of the valuation form.

HOW TO APPEAL RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUE IN ARAPAHOE COUNTY

In Arapahoe County, there was a median residential increase in values of 42% and a 22% change for commercial property.

The areas within Arapahoe County with the largest gains in residential property value were Aurora, Littleton, and Englewood, said Arapahoe County Assessor PK Kaiser. Single-family residential properties with the greatest level of demand and highest percentage increases were found in the lower price tiers while the market for higher value homes was slightly softer, resulting in moderate percentage increases.

Arapahoe County has a full page of online resources and steps to help property owners navigate the 2023 appeals process including property search tools and the online protest form to use through June 8.

Arapahoe County also has an interactive map allowing homeowners to check average home sales prices in the assessment period in their own neighborhoods.

Arapahoe County encourages residents to schedule a phone appeal appointment via email or by calling the assessors office at 303-795-4600. Walk-in services are available only through May 19.

Property owners in Arapahoe County looking to drop off an appeal form can do so at these drop boxes:

Boulder County saw a median increase in residential property valuations of around 35% and a 41% change in general commercial valuations.

Boulder County continues to be a desirable place to live and work. The latest property values recognize the desirability of the county and the strength of the real estate market during the appraisal period which ended June 30, 2022, said Boulder County Assessor Cynthia Braddock. We encourage property owners to double-check their property information and review comparable property sales via our website. If they find any errors or disagree with the values they are encouraged to file an appeal by the June 8 deadline."

The appeal form for Boulder County, which can be found here, can be emailed to assessor@bouldercounty.org or faxed to 303-441-4996. Boulder County also has three dropbox locations for protest forms located in the downtown Boulder Courthouse in Longmont or in Lafayette.

In Broomfield County, there was a median residential increase in values of 41% and a 20% change for commercial property.

The City and County of Broomfield experienced significant increases due to a strong real estate market. We recommend property owners review their Notice of Valuations as soon as they are received and to contact the Assessors Office with any questions on that valuation, said City and County of Broomfield Assessor Jay Yamashita. Sales used for analysis in the valuation process will be available on Broomfield.org on May 1, 2023.

Broomfield County property owners who disagree with their assessment can appeal via email, in person or by mail.

Broomfield County has posted documents and an Excel spreadsheet showing the single-family home sales used in the 2023 reappraisal.

Completed appeal forms can be emailed to assessor@broomfield.org and the county urges property owners to use the read receipt function to ensure proof the appeal form was filed on time. Emailed appeal forms must be received by Broomfield County by midnight on June 8.

Across nine metro counties, Denver had one of the lower median residential valuation increases at 33% and commercial properties showed a 17% change.

We understand what a significant percentage change some of our homeowners and business owners may face in value. In the Denver metro region, Douglas County showed some of the highest median residential property valuation increases at 47% with a 19% change in general commercial property valuations.

Due to our quality of life and strong economic foundations, and we are accustomed to consistent population growth and intense demand for real estate. In this reappraisal period, however, Douglas County experienced the largest increase in the residential property market since it has been tracked, said Douglas County Assessor Toby Damisch. This situation underscores the dire need for a policy change at the state level that protects Colorado homeowners and businesses.

Elbert County saw a median increase in residential property valuations of 35% and a 30% change in general commercial valuations.

Elbert Countys western portion of the county continues to be a growing, bedroom community to the metropolitan districts along the Front Range, said Elbert County Assessor Susan Murphy.

The Countys overall rural lifestyle and quality of life, combined with a shift towards remote work and the transportation options provided by Highway 86, Interstate 70, and Highway 24 continue to make Elbert County a desirable place for real estate buyers," Murphy said.

Elbert Countys website has a slew of links and information to help homeowners appeal their valuation, including this tool to research properties and review data used in the 2023 reappraisal.

In Jefferson County, the median residential increase was 36.5% and the general commercial valuation change was 20%.

Thirty-six percent is a big number. If you have not been following the local real estate market, it might be a shocking number, said Jefferson County Assessor Scot Kersgaard. For most people, property taxes probably will not go up by anything close to 36%. While I am disappointed that the legislature has not yet acted to moderate the effect values will have on taxes, there is every indication it will do so before tax bills are mailed early next year.

Jefferson County recommends homeowners file a valuation appeal sooner than later.

"The last few days of the appeal period are often very busy and you may experience delays," the assessors website notes.

Larimer County saw a median increase in residential property valuations of 40% and a 41% change in general commercial valuations.

The countys scenic parks, trails, open spaces, and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park have contributed to Larimer County becoming somewhat of a Zoom town, for people who use technology to work remotely while being close to these amenities, said Larimer County Assessor Bob Overbeck. We have fairly robust connectivity in urban areas with connectivity in outlying areas also improving.

There are five steps in Larimer Countys online process and it can be finished in just under 15 minutes, according to the assessors website.

A secure dropbox is also located at the Larimer County Administrative Services Building and residents can also fill out a protest form in person Monday through Friday at 200 W. Oak St. in Fort Collins.

The Larimer County Assessors Office also posted an explainer video to help property owners with their valuation and protest forms.

In 2000, Colorado Referendum A was passed, allowing qualifying Colorado seniors over age 65 to have 50% of the first $200,000 in actual value removed from the property tax of their primary residence.

The senior property tax exemption is also available for surviving spouses of seniors who have previously qualified. The application deadline for a senior property tax exemption is July 15. In most cases, Colorado seniors should use the short form application if they are 65 years of age or older.

There is a long-form application for exemptions to the ownership and occupancy requirements.

For seniors looking to file a property tax exemption, here are the short-form applications by county:

Disabled veterans in Colorado can get 50% of the first $200,000 value of their home exempted from property tax. The exemption is for the veteran's primary residence as of Jan. 1.

To qualify, disabled veterans must have been honorably discharged. Disabled veterans who are compensated 100% and are not employable do not qualify for the property tax exemption, according to the state's website.

Gold Star spouses can also qualify for a property tax exemption.

Property tax exemption applications for both disabled veterans and Gold Star spouses are due July 1 at the Colorado Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The state said due to a high volume of applications, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in Colorado will not be able to answer questions about whether applications are approved. It can take four to six weeks to process a property tax exemption for veterans.

DENVER A 24-year-old man was arrested for investigation of attempted murder and multiple other charges after allegedly stealing a mans truck, exchanging gunfire with him and with law enforcement, and a pursuit down Highway 285.

Kaelen Bernal, 24, was arrested for investigation on charges including attempted first-degree murder after deliberation; attempted first-degree murder extreme indifference; attempted first-degree murder of a peace officer; first-degree assault of a police officer; first degree aggravated motor vehicle theft; vehicular eluding; possession of a weapon by a previous offender; reckless endangerment; and resisting arrest, according to the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office.

According to the sheriffs office and Frank Maixner, the man whose truck was stolen, Bernal and another man stole Maixners flatbed work truck, outfitted with a crane, several toolboxes and a trailer, sometime Thursday afternoon from his business south of Indian Hills.

Maixner told Denver7 Friday he followed the suspects in a different vehicle after calling the sheriffs office around 6 p.m. giving dispatch a blow-by-blow of what was going on as they got close to Tiny Town on 285.

The sheriffs office said near Tiny Town, Bernal got out of the truck and fired several shots at Maixner.

The driver got out and started shooting at me about six rounds, Maixner said. I backed up, I ducked down below the dash, and I was about 300 feet away. If I was any closer, they could have shot me. So Im pretty lucky to even be here, to be honest with you.

After that, Bernal and another man got back into the truck, drove off, and shot at a sheriffs deputy, the sheriffs office said.

Deputies started chasing the truck on Highway 285. Near the intersection with Highway 8, two deputies were waiting to deploy stop sticks, but Bernal drove off the shoulder of the road to avoid them.

According to the sheriffs office, Bernal shot at the two deputies, who both fired back.

The trailer fell off the truck at this time, and Bernal kept driving into the Friendly Hills neighborhood and into Weaver Hollow Park despite having blown-out tires, according to the sheriffs office.

He drove around the park before a deputy was able to ram the backside of the truck and disable it, the sheriffs office said. But Bernal and the man who was with him fled on foot. Deputies took both into custody about a block away, and they found a gun inside the cab of the stolen truck, the sheriffs office said.

Bernal and the other man were taken to a hospital for minor injuries. The sheriffs office said it released the other man without charges but did not say why.

No deputies or bystanders were injured by any of the shots that were fired, according to the sheriffs office.

Maixner said he was angry that thieves had stolen his truck in broad daylight and that he followed them to be sure he had eyes on them until law enforcement could get involved.

Thank God nobody was hurt during this whole thing, he said Friday. Were still living in an area where you dont lock your doors all the time, you know, you dont have to lock your gates. Ive been in this one yard for eight years and never had any kind of incident like this.

Maixner said his truck was likely worth about $100,000 with all the additions and said so far it seems like the truck will be totaled.

Hopefully I can get some of the railings back, he said. If anybody needs a 7.3-liter diesel engine, let me know.

Ben Hanna, who lives near Weaver Hollow Park, said he had never seen anything like the pursuit Thursday night, with the vehicle driving through the heavily trafficked park.

Almost every day, we come down this path and see lots of other people out walking their dogs and walking and running, Hanna said.

The sheriffs office said the investigation into the ordeal is ongoing. The First Judicial District Attorneys Critical Incident Response Team will conduct the investigation into the police shooting aspect.

The sheriffs office is asking anyone with more information about the incident, or who saw what happened at Weaver Hollow Park, to call the tip line at 303-271-5612.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. -- Crowded trailheads are a common sight along the Front Range, especially on the weekends. But would-be hikers usually don't know a parking lot is full until they show up. An app called 'Lot Spot' wants to change that by transmitting real-time information on seven parking lots within the Jefferson County Open Space system.

Jefferson County officials knew they needed to try something new, as rangers are constantly seeing cars that are parked illegally. One picture shows where a pickup truck made its own spot by parking on the side of a hill.

"Theyve parked illegally along the side here; theyve parked along the highway and really put themselves in harms way to try to just get here to go for a hike," said Matt Robbins, the Community Connections Manager with Jefferson County Open Space.

Robbins believes it's the first time this kind of technology is being used to track parking for an open space. It works by using sensors to track cars driving in and out of the lot. Anyone with the app can check to see how many spots are still available. If the parking lot is full, the app can recommend the closest park with available spots.

There is also a function where users can report available spots that do not show up in the app.

"We want people to visit our parks but perhaps if the next wave of folks come in and know theres no parking they can check the app and know just four miles up the road theres another place for them to go," said Robbins.

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. The Jefferson County Sheriffs Office on Wednesday identified the man killed in a police shooting Tuesday at an apartment complex near W. Belleview Ave. and S. Alkire Street.

Officers shot and killed Michael Sheridan, 34, in the incident. The sheriffs office says Sheridan was being sought by the Denver Police Departments Fugitive Unit and the FBIs Safe Streets Task Force.

They discovered Sheridan was at the apartment complex in unincorporated Jefferson County and called the countys regional SWAT team in to assist with serving a warrant on Sheridan for felony menacing, third-degree assault and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, the sheriffs office said Wednesday.

The SWAT team found Sheridan in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The sheriffs office says he fired at officers, who then returned fire and fatally shot Sheridan.

The Lakewood Police Department is leading the investigation by the Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team into the shooting. The CIRT is made up of investigators from various Jefferson County law enforcement agencies that were not involved in Tuesdays shooting.

The sheriffs office did not say which agency definitively shot Sheridan. The investigation into the shooting will be presented to the Jefferson County District Attorneys Office, which will determine if any officers should be charged in the shooting.

The sheriffs office said Tuesday no officers were injured in the shooting.

ALAMOSA Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

There will be an Independence Day Celebration with the Kiwanis pancake breakfast and a Main Street parade. This years theme is Indpendence Day the Valley Way. But there will be no fireworks this year.

ARVADA Wednesday, July 4

Arvada will only host a fireworks show this year, saying that organizing an all-day event has become increasingly difficult in recent years due to volunteer and city staffing numbers. Gates open to vehicles at 7 p.m. and fireworks start around 9 p.m. at the Stenger Sports Complex (W. 58th Ave. and Oak St.)

ASPEN Wednesday, July 4 

Rather than fireworks, Aspen will this year host a drone light show, in which dozens of drones dance across the sky choreographed to music. The drone light show starts at 9:15 p.m. at Wagner Park and will be followed by a performance by the band Thievery Corporation at Belly Up. The rest of the day beforehand will be filled with other family events. Last years fireworks were canceled because of fire restrictions.

AURORA Wednesday, July 4

The city will host its Fourth of July Spectacular from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4. There will be musical entertainment from Narrow Gauge and Syndicate from 6 to 9:30, which will be followed by the fireworks show at 9:30. Its the only place you can watch fireworks in Aurora, as they are banned in the rest of the city.

AVON Tuesday, July 3 (no fireworks)

Update: Avon had canceled its fireworks display.

Avons Salute to the USA celebration is sponsored by Alpine Bank and will run from 5 p.m. until about 10 p.m. There will be a host of family-friendly events and food, as well as live music from the Dearling Band and Arapahoe Philharmonic.

BEAVER CREEK Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Update: Beaver Creek has canceled its fireworks show.

There will be free slides, bounce houses and a kids zone that run through the afternoon, starting at noon. There will also be food and drinks in Centennial Park.

BENNETT - (no fireworks)

There are no fireworks events scheduled in Bennett this year. There is an open burning ban in effect for the town, however, so dont light any of your own. Town offices are closed on July 4.

BLACK HAWK Wednesday, July 4

Black Hawk will host its Boom Town fireworks special that the city touts as the largest display in Colorado. The city says that weather and restrictions permitting, the display will start at 9:30 p.m.

BOULDER - Wednesday, July 4

There are a host of July 4 events scheduled in Boulder this year, including the 5/10K Craig Towler Freedom Run, 4th on Pearl, Chautauquas 120th birthday, and a fireworks display at Folsom Field that will begin at dark. Doors for fireworks open at 8 p.m.

BRECKENRIDGE Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

The town of Breckenridge has already canceled its fireworks display this year because of dry conditions and a dry forecast. Fireworks are prohibited in town limits as well. But the 10K trail run, mountain bike race and parade are still scheduled to take place, with other family events as well.

BRIGHTON Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4

The Stars & Stripes Independence Day celebration at Riverdale Regional Park takes place on July 3 from 4 to 10 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for 9:30 p.m.

Brightons Fourth of July Community Celebration will take place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. on July 4 at Carmichael Park, just behind Brighton City Hall. There will be free activities for kids, food, music and more. Fireworks will begin at dark.

BROOMFIELD Wednesday, July 4

Activities begin around 5 p.m. at Broomfield County Commons Park with activities for children, a beer garden and live music. The fireworks display is set to begin at 9:30 p.m., weather and fire bans permitting.

BRUSH July 2, 3 and 4

The Brush rodeo kicks off on Monday with barbecue and a beer garden, along with other rodeo activities. The same schedule is set for Tuesday, July 3. Independence Day will start with a pancake breakfast, a parade, and the day will include a water fight, a museum open house, more rodeo displays and a 9:30 p.m. firework display.

BUENA VISTA Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

There will be a community parade, a craft show, a 5K run, pancake breakfast, pie sale and more but the fireworks display has been canceled due to Stage II fire restrictions, according to Town Administrator Phillip Puckett.

BYERS Wednesday, July 4

There will be a spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the fire protection district from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 3. On the Fourth of July, the day will kick off with a pancake breakfast, following by a parade, street far and other events. A rodeo will take place starting at 4 p.m., which will be followed by fireworks if there is no fire ban in place.

CANON CITY (no fireworks)

The city council postponed this years fireworks display because of fire restrictions and drought conditions, according to the Canon City Daily Record. 

CASTLE ROCK Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Fireworks were canceled as of June 28. They had been scheduled to be set off from the butte above Red Hawk Ridge Golf Course. If conditions are ripe for wildfires, the fire department could choose to cancel the display. Fireworks are currently banned for personal use due to fire restrictions.

COLORADO SPRINGS Wednesday, July 4

Independence Day activities at Memorial Park start at 5:30 p.m. and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic will perform at 7:30 with a fireworks show at dusk.

COMMERCE CITY Wednesday, July 4

Commerce City boasts what it calls the largest public fireworks display in the state. The free 4thFest celebration takes place on the south side of Dicks Sporting Goods Park starting at 5 p.m. At 7 p.m., the Colorado Rapids take on the Seattle Sounders and fireworks will follow the match at about 9:30 p.m.

CREEDE Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Creedes fireworks show is canceled this year due to fire danger but all of the other 4th of July activities, including the parade and mining competitions, will go on as scheduled.

CRESTED BUTTE Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Crested Buttes fireworks show is canceled due to fire danger, so a concert will take place instead. The days festivities kick off with a pancake breakfast at the Crested Butte Fire and EMS Department. 

CRIPPLE CREEK Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Update: Cripple Creek has canceled its fireworks show.

Cripple Creeks 4th of July celebration kicks off with live music at noon and continuing all day.

The Colorado Speedway in Dacono has fireworks shows planned on three nights: Saturday, June 30; Friday, July 6 and Saturday, July 7.

Tuesday, July 3: Independence Eve fireworks at Civic Center Park The annual 4th of July celebration at Civic Center Park will include music, a light show and fireworks over the City and County Building, with events scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4: Colorado Rockies vs. San Francisco Giants The Rockies are hosting the San Francisco Giants at Coors Field on Tuesday and Wednesday at 6:10 p.m. with fireworks to follow.

Wednesday, July 4: Fireworks at Elitch Gardens

Once Elitch Gardens closes on the 4th, the fireworks will begin. Admission is free with park admission or a season pass.

Wednesday, July 4: Denver Outlaws vs. Boston Cannons Enjoy a fireworks show after the Denver Outlaws-Boston Cannons game at Broncos Stadium at Mile High. The game starts at 7 p.m.

DURANGO Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Durangos fireworks show is canceled this year but events are scheduled all day long, starting with breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

Want to get started on your Independence Day celebrations a day early? The 3rd of July Extravaganza in Erie kicks off at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club. The fireworks show will take place after dark.

FORT COLLINS Wednesday, July 4

Come down to Fort Collins for a day of music, fun, fireworks and patriotism! The city kicks off the Independence Day celebration with their FireKracker 5K at 7:30 a.m., followed by their annual 4th of July Parade on Mountain Avenue starting at 10 a.m. Enjoy live music at City Park starting at 4:15 p.m. and stay for the incredible fireworks show which is set to begin at around 9:35 p.m.

FORT LUPTON Wednesday, July 4

The City of Fort Lupton begins their 2018 Independence Day celebration with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. sharp. There will also be a petting zoo, a magic show, face painting, train ride, food, vendors, a beer garden, BBQ, a veterans tribute, live music (starting at 7:30 p.m.) with festivities culminating with a firework show at dusk.

FRISCO Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

There are no fireworks in Frisco this year but if you are looking for an Independence Day celebration in a quintessential small mountain town, then Friscos Fabulous 4th of July will fit the bill. Start the celebration with a pancake breakfast, followed by a kids bike decorating contest, music, a block party and free fishing derby for the kids. 

GEORGETOWN Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Though the fireworks show is canceled this year, the Town of Georgetown will begin their Independence Day festivities with a 5K run at 8 a.m., followed by a parade at 11 a.m. But thats not all: The annual BBQ will continue the party at City Park, and there will also be a beer garden, live music by Bottle Rocket Hurricane. 

GLENDALE Monday, July 2 

The City of Glendale will celebrate the 4th of July a bit early, with a firework show planned for Monday, July 2. The firework show will go off from Creekside Park at dusk (at around 9:15 p.m.) There will be several street closures starting at about 7:30 p.m.

GOLDEN Wednesday, July 4

Celebrate Independence Day in Golden with activities starting at noon. If weather permits, the day will end with a large firework display at Lions Park on 10th Street.

GRANBY Wednesday, July 4

Granby has a full line up of events planned for Independence Day including a pancake breakfast at the Emily Warner Aviation Museum, the Granby Fourth of July Parade on Main Street, BBQ at Polhamus Park, live entertainment, kids games, dunk tank and much more.

Fireworks follow the annual rodeo which begins at 7 p.m. at Heels Arena, off US 40.

GRAND JUNCTION Wednesday, July 4

Independence Day fireworks will take place after the GJ Rockies game vs. Ogden on July 4. Buy a ticket and see the fireworks from inside the stadium or watch from Lincoln Park.

GRAND LAKE Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

GREELEY Wednesday, July 4

The Greeley Stampede starts Independence Day with an Independence Day Parade, which runs along historic 10th Avenue starting at the University of Northern Colorado campus at 19th Street and ending on 5th Street beyond historic Lincoln Park. A large 4th of July firework display starting at approximately 9:30 p.m. will follow. The displays will be shot over the north west corner of Island Grove Park. Catch great views from anywhere in Island Grove Park.

GREENWOOD VILLAGE Wednesday, July 4

Fiddler's Green will host a firework display on July 4 after a Colorado Symphony concert. Check here fortickets and information.

GUNNISON Wednesday, July 4

Independence Day festivities begin at 8 a.m. with a 5K Run (and a 1K run for the kids), followed by games, music and dance performances at Main Street and Virginia. The celebration will continue from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Jorgenson Park with a food court, beer garden and a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

HIGHLANDS RANCH Wednesday, July 4

The Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks at Highlands Ranch returns to Highland Heritage Regional Park. The celebration will start at 4:00 p.m. and conclude with the fireworks show at 9:30 p.m.

HOLYOKE Wednesday, July 4

The Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department Fireworks will be held at Holyoke City Park on July 4.

IDAHO SPRINGS Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Independence Day celebrations in Idaho Springs begin with the Tom Hayden Memorial 5K Run/Walk. The town will also be hosting an afternoon complete with live music and dancing in downtown at Citizens Park. There will also be delicious BBQ for you to enjoy! 

NOTE: The city announced it had to cancel their fireworks display due to fire danger. The show will be rescheduled for the Saturday after Thanksgiving.

Celebrate 4th of July at Waneka Lake Park starting at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. Grab some grub from food truck vendors; beer or cider and wine from Stem Ciders and Wine. There will be a bounce house and face-painting for the kids, and a live band all afternoon. Free fireworks begin at dusk.

Perry Park County Club will not be having a fireworks display this year.

LA JUNTA Wednesday, July 4

The Old Fashioned Fourth of July runs from 1:30 4:15 p.m. at Bents Old Fort.

LEADVILLE  Wednesday, July 4

LITTLETON Wednesday, July 4

There will be family-friendly events beginning at 3 p.m. at Cornerstone and Belleview parks. Food will be available, as well as plenty of activities for the kids. Free fireworks begin after dark at Cornerstone Park, located at 5150 S. Windermere St. in Littleton. 

LONE TREE Wednesday, July 4

Events at Sweetwater Park begin at 4 p.m., but youll need to buy a wristband to get in. Theyre available to Lone Tree and Acres Green residents for free for up to four. Up to four additional wristbands can be bought for $5 apiece. Youll need an ID or proof of residency to pick them up, and supplies are limited. There will be a kids bike parade, an artist corner, obstacle course, water slide and plenty of other activities, as well as live music and food. Fireworks start at 9:15 p.m.

LONGMONT Wednesday, July 4

The free Longmont 4th of July fireworks display starts at 9:30 p.m. at the Boulder County Fairgrounds. The show is free, but there wont be parking at the fairgrounds. The city advises people to park at nearby shopping centers and to walk to the fenced-in area in front of Jack Murphy or anywhere else nearby. Handicapped parking will be available at the south entrance of the fairgrounds, and KGUD 90.7 will sync their music up with the fireworks display for added effect.

LOUISVILLE Wednesday, July 4

The 4th of July fireworks display will be held at the Coal Creek Golf Course from 6-10 p.m. However, there's no parking at the golf course. Get shuttle and event information here.

LOVELAND Wednesday, July 4

The annual Independence Day celebration at North Lake Park, 2626 N. Taft Ave., will feature entertainment throughout the day and a fireworks display at night, to celebrate the Fourth of July. For more information, click here.

Due to high fire danger, the City of Manitou Springs has canceled its fireworks display.

MONTROSE Wednesday, July 4

This year's fireworks will be viewable at 8:30 p.m., or later depending on darkfall, at the Clifford E. Baldridge Regional Park complex and a number of locations along south Townsend. 

MONUMENT Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

The fireworks show is canceled this year but live music will kick off the evening at 7 p.m. at Palmer Lake in Monument on Independence Day.

MORRISON (no fireworks)

Morrison will not be holding fireworks celebrations this year. 

NEDERLAND - Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

The town of Nederland will hold a 4th of July parade on Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. The parade will begin on Snyder Street and E. 2nd Street at Tin Shed Sports and Salto Coffee Works. Nederland will not hold fireworks celebrations this year. 

NORTHGLENN - Wednesday, July 4

A day-long festival will return to Northglenn on Wednesday for the July 4th Festival, which starts at 7 a.m. and runs until 10 a.m. at the E.B. Rains Jr. Memorial Park, located at 11800 Community Center Drive. Families can bring picnics and blankets for the annual fireworks program. OURAY - Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Tucked in the mountains in southwest Colorado, Ouray welcomes visitors near and far to its old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration. The morning kicks off with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. in the Ouray Community Center, before diving into a 10K Race for Ouray Schools, a street parade at 10 a.m., games, live music and more. PARKER - Wednesday, July 4

The town of Parker will hold its Stars and Stripes Celebration on Wednesday at Salisbury Park, located at 12010 S. Motsenbocker Road. Families can bring a blanket and lawn chair for an evening packed with family fun. This year, seating is allowed on the Parker Parks and Recreation ball fields. PUEBLO - Wednesday, July 4

Rollin on the Riverwalk will return for the 15th time Wednesday. Families can bring lawn chairs out to the AMR Confluence Plaza at 101 Union Ave. to enjoy the fireworks show. Food and retail vendors will be on-site. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the fireworks begin at 9 p.m. General admission tickets are $3 per person and premium seating is $15 per person. RIFLE - Tuesday, July 3 (no fireworks)

The city of Rifle will hold festivities for Independence Day on July 3 at Centennial Park, located at 300 W. 5th St. Due to fire danger, the city has canceled the annual fireworks show. SILVERTHORNE - Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

The Lake Dillon Theatre Company and the National Repertory Orchestra will perform to Rainbow Park in Silverthorne on Wednesday. This annual celebration includes a free, patriotic concert from the orchestra with a special performance featuring the theatre company. A community celebration will start after the concert. Silvertons annual Fourth of July event is known in the area for its old-fashioned family fun. The Kendall Mountain Recreation Area will be open for camping through the holiday and is within walking distance of downtown festivities, like the parade and carnival in Memorial Park. STEAMBOAT SPRINGS - June 30 through July 4 (no fireworks)

Steamboat Springs will hold its annual Fourth of July celebration starting June 30 through July 4 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day. For more than 100 years, the city has celebrated Independence Day in true western fashion. The weekend will include a rodeo series, summer ski competition, farmers market, live music and more. STERLING - Wednesday, July 4

Sterling will bring the Heritage Festival back at the Overland Trail Museum at 110 Overland Trail Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Families are invited to enjoy a day full of local history and fun. TELLURIDE - Wednesday, July 4 (no fireworks)

Telluride invites visitors and residents alike to participate in the Telluride Foundations Rundola, a recreational race to benefit the foundation. Participants begin at the base of the gondola and finish at the top. A parade and firemens BBQ will follow. The fireworks show has been canceled due to fire danger. Thorton will holds its 4th of July celebration Wednesday, starting at 4 p.m. at Carpenter Park Fields, located at 3498 E. 112th Ave. The event will include food vendors, a beer garden, live entertainment, parachutists and fireworks at dusk. Vail America Days returns Wednesday for the towns annual Fourth of July celebration. Events, including an orchestra performance, a market and art show and more, will kick off the days leading up to July 4. Independence Day will feature a pancake breakfast, bake sale, parade and more. The town of Wellington and Wellington Community Activities Commission invites visitors to participate in this years Wellington 4th of July Celebration. A Family Fun Fest will begin at 10 a.m. in Centennial Park and will include vendors, food, music, inflatables, a pancake breakfast, parade and a fireworks show at dusk. The city of Westminster will hold its Uncle Sams Splash Bash from 1-3 p.m. on Wednesday at Countryside Outdoor Pool, located at 10470 Oak St. in Broomfield. The city will also hold its annual Fourth of July celebration at City Park, 10455 N. Sheridan Boulevard. Anderson Park in Wheat Ridge will hold two concerts for its weekly Performances in the Park on Wednesday Bradley Weaver will perform from 10-10:45 a.m. and Papa Juke Band will take the stage from 6:30-8 p.m. While there are no citywide fireworks this year, the annual Carnation Festival in plans to have fireworks on Aug. 10 and 11. 

WINTER PARK - Wednesday, July 4 (no live fireworks)

Hideaway Park in downtown Winter Park will host an Independence Day celebration complete with free inflatables, face painters, carnival games, and live music.
