Where that boundary settles will play a big role in storm intensity if the moist air moves farther toward I-25, the threat of severe weather expands. In the most humid zones, a few storms may produce large hail, damaging gusts up to 70 mph, and a small chance for an isolated tornado.

Other locations will still see showers and storms later today, but with lower severe impacts. The unsettled pattern continues into Sunday as another weather system approaches. Showers and thunderstorms are expected again during the afternoon and evening, along with breezy north winds. Small shifts in moisture and front placement will be key to Sundays storm strength even with modest instability, strong winds higher in the atmosphere could support a few strong to severe storms.

The Denver7 News team is tracking the latest severe weather alerts and storm reports below.

LINKS: Latest forecast | Radars | Traffic | Weather Page | 24/7 Weather Stream
Saturday, May 16
5:02 p.m. | Severe storm near Proctor | Warning in effect until 6:00 p.m., said NWS in Boulder.

4:28 p.m. | Philips County severe storm | Warning in effect until 5:15 p.m., said NWS in Boulder.

4:02 p.m. | Lincoln County severe storm | Quarter sized-hail also possible in Lincoln County. Severe t-storm warning issued until 4:30 p.m.

3:59 p.m. | New severe t-storm warning | Quarter sized-hail possible in storm near Akron. Severe t-storm warning issued until 4:45 p.m.

3:30p.m. | CSU ceremonies impacted | CSU Police & Safety on social media said CHHS ceremonies would be delayed Saturday:

Their post on X:

"Colorado State University is anticipating weather this afternoon around 3:30-4 p.m. The CHHS recognition ceremonies at Moby Arena will experience a delay and will now start at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m."

3:27p.m. | Grass fire reported | The NWS in Boulder also said a grass fire was reported north of Colorado Air and Space Port. Given the heavy, wet snow expected in the area, city officials provided the following tips for residents:
Removing Snow from Trees: Make sure the tree is safe and clear of utility lines; for safety reasons, residents are only encouraged to remove snow from small, young trees (planted within the last five years). Removing snow from larger trees can be dangerous due to falling debris. Only use the bristle side of a broom to gently brush off the snow. Do not hit the tree; any physical contact with the branches can cause more damage. Residents can also gently shake the trees to remove the snow, while watching for falling snow and staying safe. Keep checking the trees. Once snow stops, heavy snow from the top of the tree can fall to lower branches and overload lower limbs causing damage.Downed branches: Property owners are responsible for pruning and cleaning up all debris from trees located on private property and within the public right of way adjacent to their property. Residents can visit www.denvergov.org/forestry for a list of licensed and insured tree care contractors. If emergency removal of a fallen tree or tree branch is needed immediately to clear a street, the city will remove it; the cost of the work will be billed to the responsible property owner. If safe, residents are asked to remove any obstructions to the public street, right of way, and sidewalk. Also, avoid parking underneath trees.Disposal of Tree Branches: Residents have a few options for disposing of downed branches. Branches must be no larger than 4 inches in diameter and cut into lengths of 4 feet or less. Denver Solid Waste Management customers can dispose of branches that fit inside their compost cart. Solid Waste Management also collects a limited amount of branches as part of its Large Item Pickup service. Branches must be bundled and tied and weigh no more than 50 pounds. Customers may set out up to 10 bundles of branches on their scheduled Large Item Pickup day. Residents may also dispose of branches at the Cherry Creek Recycling Drop-off [denvergov.org] at 7400 Cherry Creek S. Drive during regular operating hours. Again, branches must be no larger than 4 inches in diameter and cut into lengths of 4 feet or less.
4:23 p.m. | Littleton delays | All City of Littleton facilities, including Littleton Center, Bemis Public Library, the Littleton Museum, and Littleton Municipal Court will open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 6, city officials announced Tuesday.

4:06 p.m. | Closings | The Oval on CSU's Main Campus will close at 6 p.m. due to wet, heavy snow on tree branches. Barricades will be placed, and the area will remain closed tomorrow, university officials announced via social media. Students are advised to avoid entering the Oval area and follow all posted signs and barricades.

3:45 p.m. | Weather update | On-and-off rain showers continue for the Denver metro, but that's about to change in a few hours when a storm system moving from the north arrives to our area, bringing potentially between 4-5 inches of fresh powder by Wednesday afternoon, according to meteorologists from the National Weather Service.

During a briefing earlier Tuesday, Kenley Bonner, a meteorologist for the NWS office in Boulder, told news media the main concern from this storm is the heavy, wet snow that could lead to downed tree limbs and scattered power outages across the Front Range.

She said that while the northern mountains in Boulder and Larimer counties will encounter difficult travel conditions, some uncertainty still remained on the impacts to the roadways along the I-25 Corridor and other lower elevations.

Check out the latest timing for heaviest snowfall across Colorado in the table below:

Bonner said a freeze warning will also be in effect for a period of about 12 hours starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday for all of the plains and the I-25 Corridor in northeast and east central Colorado.

12:29 p.m. | School closures | Classes are canceled at Red Feather Lakes Elementary, Stove Prairie Elementary, and Livermore Elementary as wintry conditions "may make it unsafe to provide student transportation on mountain routes," officials with the Poudre School District said in a letter to parents and staff earlier Tuesday.

10:50 a.m. | Cold weather shelters | The City and County of Denver announced shelters would be available beginning, Tuesday at 6 p.m. through Thursday at 11 a.m. in preparation for the incoming snowstorm and cold weather.

They include:
Denver Rescue Mission Lawrence Street Community Center at 2222 Lawrence Street for men. It doesnt look like that is a danger this year," Merewether said.

The closest motels are in Hugo and Limon, so this community embraces a true neighbor-helping-neighbor spirit, opening up their home to experience the local way of life.

Kravig said she usually has between four to five people stay with her, but that it varies from year to year.

"We just open up our homes, several people open up their homes, gracious about it, and their spare bedrooms or whatever, and we just find places for people to stay, and they don't get much sleep anyway," said Kravig. "So, even if it's a couch, it works out because they eat all the meals in the community building."

Registration is still open, where tickets can be purchased online for either Friday or Saturday, or both days.
What are mountain plovers?
Merewether shared a story about the mountain plovers first being spotted in this area, which involved a man named Russell Davis. Davis spotted a wildlife biologist on his property looking at the bird, who thought this species should be on the endangered species list.

A study prepared for the Bureau of Land Management by researchers Lee Grunau and Mike Wunder from Colorado State University's Natural Heritage Program cited the mountain plover declined by an estimated 63% from 1966 to 1996, which was "greater than declines shown in any other grassland endemic."

During the interaction with Davis and this biologist, there was a realization that these birds could thrive in this area, and ranchers could learn more about the species.

"There were some concerns about whether they should be put on the endangered species list, but we decided as a community that we would support them and that there was a way for us to conserve them without putting them on the threatened endangered species list," said Merewether. "We can do the things that we need to do as farmers and ranchers and still support the mountain plover population, and of course, it's a boon to us as a community."

While looking through his binoculars, Merewether laughed as he explained that mountain plovers are actually far from the mountains, preferring the prairie instead. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, these birds breed in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and the Texas Panhandle.

Merewether said the birds will lay their eggs in Karval in sets of three, and nesting season, which coincides with the festival, is typically the best time to spot them.

"It sets us apart from other communities, and a lot of the people associate Karval with the mountain plover, which is nice," Merewether said.

While this weekend will bring in a boost of birders, it's also a testament to this community's big heart for a small bird.

"It represents the prairie, the sunsets where we live theres good sunsets and the prairie grasses, and the plover bird is a very good representation of the prairies and where we all come from," Kravig said.

The patient along with three other previous cases reported by the CDPHE over the past several weeks is not believed to be tied to an ongoing outbreak in Broomfield.

But in an email to Denver7 Wednesday, CDPHE officials confirmed that four of the five cases in the county are linked, which means Colorado is now dealing with a second outbreak of the virus across the state.

State health officials said this latest patient could have exposed people at the UCHealth Primary Care clinic in Johnstown, located at 4846 Larimer Parkway on Monday, April 13, between 3:15 p.m. 5:20 p.m.; and at the Banner Fort Collins Medical Center Emergency, located at 4700 Lady Moon Drive, between 3:35 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. on that same date.
What to do if you believe you were exposed
Anyone who believes they may have been exposed especially those who have not been vaccinated with the MMR vaccine should monitor for symptoms for 21 days and avoid public gatherings or high-risk settings, health officials said in a news release.

State health officials said those who were potentially exposed in connection with this latest case may develop symptoms through Monday, May 4.

Symptoms to watch out for include anything from a fever, a cough, a runny nose, and red, watery eyes that develop into a rash that starts on the face and then spreads to the rest of the body about three to five days after symptoms first start. A person with measles is contagious four days before and four days after the rash appears.

State health official surge people who develop symptoms to call the CDPHE at 720-653-3369 or their local public health agency immediately by phone before trying to seek treatment to avoid other people from becoming potentially infected with the virus. the CDPHE urges people to call an urgent care center or emergency department and explain that you may have been exposed to measles if you do not have a health care provider.

While most people recover within two or three weeks after contracting the virus, unvaccinated people run the risk of complications from the disease, including ear infections, seizures, pneumonia, immune amnesia, brain damage and ultimately, death.

Denver7 has been closely following confirmed measles cases in Colorado amid a multi-state outbreak in the U.S. that began last year. If vaccination is not possible, antibody treatment can help in some cases if its given within six days of exposure, state health officials said.

Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and your community, the CDPHE spokesperson said.

While the two-dose series of the MMR vaccine has a 97% efficacy rate against infection, about 3 in every 100 people can still get infected if exposed to the virus, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Vaccinated individuals will usually develop milder symptoms and are less likely to spread it to others, according to state health officials.

People who got vaccinated against measles before 1968 should talk to their health care provider about possibly getting a booster as the vaccine used before that year wasn't as effective.
Another bad measles year likely on the horizon for Colorado
As of Tuesday, Colorado has reported cases of the virus in Adams (5), Arapahoe (1), Broomfield (4), Saguache (1), and Weld (5) counties, according to statewide data.

Weld County is now tied with Adams County when it comes to the greatest number of cases so far this year. Up until 2014, Colorado saw between zero and two cases each year.

Across the country, the number of confirmed measles infections so far this year has now surpassed 1,700, which represents about 75% of all measles cases the U.S. reported in all of 2025.

Editor's note on April 15 at 2:14 p.m.:
This story has been edited to include more information about the cases in Weld County from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment
.

Charles Marsh, CDOT's northwest regional communications manager, explained that the department's contract with a third-party vendor expired in July 2025. The vendor operated 136 traffic cameras.

Read our previous in-depth story on this development below.

Ultimately, instead of working with another third party, CDOT decided to build and operate its own permanent, state-owned and state-managed camera system a process that was already underway back in September, Marsh told Denver7. That would start with replacing 66 of the original 136 cameras, he said, adding that the number was limited due to budget and infrastructure limitations.

In CDOT's press release Friday, it noted that only about 90 cameras were removed last summer. Denver7 is working to confirm which number is correct. We will update this story once we do.

Several of the new 66 cameras will go up in remote areas where people rely on them to view highway conditions, CDOT said. The department listened to public feedback when identifying where to place the new permanent cameras.

In the meantime, CDOT acknowledged that "coverage was critical" in some places, and travelers and residents needed a temporary fix. As a short-term and cost-effective solution, the department decided to position solar-powered cameras on existing infrastructure or portable trailers. That included Highway 40 on Berthoud Pass, Highway 40 on Rabbit Ears Pass, Highway 14 on Cameron Pass, Highway 133 on McClure Pass and the Nordic Center on Highway 65 in Mesa County.

In September, Denver7 received an email from one resident who was particularly concerned about the lack of cameras on Cameron Pass, which now has a temporary camera setup: "These are (or were) vital cameras near Cameron Pass, especially people who commute or work, using this major highway... Driving in the mountains can be dangerous, especially in the winter, and these cameras help us to know before we go."

In a press release issued on Friday, CDOT said it had started the installation project on Monday in south-central Colorado, specifically at the intersection of Highway 24 and Highway 285 at Antero Junction, as well as Highway 24 near Manitou Springs and Highway 67 near Cripple Creek.

Drivers won't feel major impacts from this, as most of the work will happen off of the roadway.

The 66 state-owned cameras are expected to be ready and live by fall 2027.

CDOT released the below map, which outlines where the new cameras will be installed. Click here to view the map in a new window.

However, travelers looking for insight on conditions on the roadways can still check COtrip.org by using the Road Conditions layer.

To find the Road Conditions layer on the map, go to COTrip.org, find the map, and locate the layers menu on the right side. The reservoir completely dried up. And with that, signs of recreation that no longer exist stick out of the dry bed. An empty crater of dirt. At least for the time being.

So, where we're standing right now is just... 50 feet from the end of the boat ramp, said Jim Ramsay, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) aquatic biologist for the region. And we're in the dry lake bed. Normally we would be in about probably 25 feet of water right here if the lake was full.
Watch more about the Two Buttes Reservoir in the video player below
Two Buttes Reservoir, and its accompanying state wildlife habitat area, sits in the extreme southeast corner of Colorado between Lamar and Springfield. Its aptly named after a nearby geographic feature.

The 700-acre body of water is typically a recreational oasis in the plains, with ample fishing opportunities and boating. The prairie reservoir served as a refuge for the region.

Down here in southeast Colorado, there aren't very many places to go fishing, boating, and recreating. So, when this lake fills up, it's a big deal for the local communities, Ramsay said.

Two Buttes doesnt serve as a local water supply, but its impact is felt far and wide, Ramsay added.

It's a great perk for the local economy, and it really boosts the area to have visitation from the Front Range and from Oklahoma and Kansas. People come from a long way to recreate here at Two Buttes Reservoir, he said.

In his 20 years as an aquatic biologist for the area, Ramsay said hes seen the reservoir dry out three times by his recollection. Its not necessarily uncommon, but the extended drought in the region was exacerbated by Colorados record warm winter and record low snowpack.

Two Buttes is fed by an intermittent stream that flows in after large storm events. Ramsay said the drainage is narrow, so the storms have to hit the drainage perfectly and put down enough precipitation to flow down.

In 2013, Ramsay said the reservoir was bone dry and filled up to 30 feet within a week thanks to some big storms and flooding. That water lasted about eight years before the next dry up.

The most recent big storm to fill Two Buttes came three or four years ago, he said.

If we could get a fresh storm every year that would just run water in here, we could keep this lake going, said Ramsay. But unfortunately, we're at the mercy of Mother Nature when it comes to that.

In late October, CPW issued an emergency fish salvage for Two Buttes due to the declining water levels and the unlikelihood of significant rainfall.

A salvage order comes when the lake is in imminent danger of going dry or becoming too low to support a fishery. That means the game fish in the reservoir are in peril of dying with no water. The salvage order allows anglers to take the fish with relaxed restrictions and regulations on fishing.

That salvage order ended last week, no longer needed since theres no longer any water.

If and when Two Buttes fills again, Ramsay said it can quickly become one of the best warmwater fisheries in Colorado. It has produced strong populations of largemouth bass, wipers, saugeye, channel catfish, bluegill, and crappie.

Strangely enough (a sign of the unique geography of the area), just a stones throw away from Two Butteson the other side of the earthen dam of its eastern edgethe Black Hole Pond still holds good water levels and is providing fishing opportunities.

A fisherman was driving through from Oklahoma to Aurora and stopped by to try his luck in Black Hole Pond. But while casting his lure, he questioned what happened to Two Buttes. The area had been recommended to him to break during his road trip.

Meantime, though Two Buttes could quickly fill up with some good storms in the near future, CPW isnt wasting the land during the period of uncertainty.

Recently, CPW had a plane fly over the dry lake bed to drop seeds.

In absence of water, we can grow some grasses and forbs and some vegetation that benefits the terrestrial wildlife that inhabit the area, Ramsay said. The deer, the pheasants, the quail all can use the plants that grow up in the dry lake bed.

___

____

Watch KOAA News5 on your time, anytime with our free streaming app available for your Roku, FireTV, AppleTV and Android TV. A rooster sanctuary on the Eastern Plains took in fighting roosters seized in Eagle County as part of a drug bust.

The Eagle County Sheriff's Office found 17 roosters along with narcotics during a traffic stop last month. They also found blades and equipment used in rooster fighting.

"Most people don't know that the game roosters are really, really easy to handle," said Jewel Johnson, founder of Rooster Sanctuary at Danzig's Roost.

She said typically roosters she's seen taken from fighting rings are strong, healthy and calm around humans as those are the types of birds suspects would use the most in fights.

Eagle County contacted the rooster sanctuary to take in the 17 birds they seized. It's an encouraging trend, according to Johnson, that not a single bird was euthanized before given a shot at a second chance.

In the last decade she'd taken in roosters seized from fighting rings, she said that is certainly not always the case.

"They come up with the same excuses over and over and over again. It's 'health and behavior, health and behavior," she said of rational she's heard from other jurisdictions. "I have yet to see any of that come to fruition with any of the groups that I've taken in."

The sanctuary is located in Adams County.

"There's been a couple seizures in this county and we have not been asked to take in any of the roosters," said Johnson.

Denver7 checked in with Adams County. They said since 2024, there have been 2 cases of fighting roosters being seized.

In one of the cases, details cannot be disclosed because there are ongoing court proceedings.

According to Adams County, the second case resulted in the seizure of 39 birds. They said, typically, the Bureau of Animal Protection (BAP) is involved on scene for veterinarian evaluation. However, for some reason, BAP was not available in this second case so several birds were euthanized. The county cited medical or behavioral reasons.

The county reports in 2024, 142 birds from those two cases were taken to the Riverdale Animal Shelter and 111 were adopted.

Johnson hopes the sanctuary can be a resource for law enforcement across the state and said the fighting roosters she just took in from Eagle County are doing great.

"They respond quickly to positive interaction and routine, and they're the most predictable roosters that we've ever had," she said.

Johnson suggests better training, patience and education about birds would go a long way when law enforcement responds to cases involving fighting roosters.

The show now uses a pre-bedding system. Mulch is blown through a tube from a special truck to put down a uniform layer before exhibitors arrive. That change, Bode said, lowered annual waste from about 2,500 tons roughly 9,000 cubic yards to about 1,600 tons, or about 6,000 cubic yards.

Its also benefiting our local businesses, he said. Express Mulching is a local business, so we're utilizing them. The company that's doing our hauling to take them to composting is a local business The composting company is a local business. So, were definitely benefiting the environment here and helping our neighbors.

All bedding is mulched, hauled to a local composting facility, and turned into bagged compost sold through local retailers.

Its very possible that if youre purchasing gardening materials come springtime, you might be getting some of the waste materials that were generated during (the) stock show, Bode said.

The show also takes steps to protect local waterways during the show by diverting storm drains in the stockyard area to the public sewer system so waste is treated rather than discharged into nearby rivers. The yards undergo a sanitization process that can continue until mid-March.
From poop to potting soil: Stock Show turns animal bedding into compost
I think if you look, youll find that the ag industry is one of the best stewards when it comes to being environmentally friendly, he said.
