Hair maintenance in the time of coronavirus is a serious matter. Hair salons may be closed, but hair keeps growing — and those roots are showing.
One woman who’s embracing her gray is Kelly Ripa. The “Live With Kelly and Ryan” host is keeping a photo log of her new gray growth on her Instagram stories, naming the series #RootWatch. And during a live TV appearance on April 20, when Ripa and her husband Mark Consuelos co-hosted Ripa’s show in the absence of Ryan Seacrest, she gave viewers a close-up.
“You can kind of see it forcing. It wants to show you. It wants you to see the reality,” Ripa said as she tilted her head down to face the camera and parted her hair.
Consuelos, for one, likes the natural look. “I gotta tell you, I see you in the morning and I think it looks beautiful. I like it. I’m looking forward to when it’s just completely gray.”
“Which is probably by the end of the week,” Ripa deadpanned.
Ripa had previously addressed the issue of hair-coloring during quarantine with her regular co-host, Seacrest, in a segment posted online in March, in which the two hosts interviewed a couple of hairstylists to find out the best tactics for coloring your own hair at home.

Only a few days before shooting that segment, Ripa had joked on Instagram that her attempts at doing her own hair and makeup at home were already failing.

In the April 20 episode that Ripa hosted with her husband, she also revealed she’s started cutting her own hair at home with kitchen scissors — but she hasn’t yet gone as far as cutting her bangs.
“I didn’t say anything, but I was ready to jump in case you went across the bang,” Consuelos added.
More and more people are resorting to doing their own hair during the COVID-19 lockdown, and some of the results aren’t great.
In an interview with Vogue, Brooklyn-based hairstylist Mischa G suggested that people reach out to their hairstylists for “tips and tricks on how to maintain your hair health” with the products they have at home. However, she said she’d never recommend that her clients cut their own hair at home.
So, maybe Ripa should leave the scissors in the kitchen drawer. But we reckon she should definitely continue to embrace the gray.
