In a box office battle of the sequels, The Devil Wears Prada 2 had the slight edge over Mortal Kombat II in North American theaters this weekend. According to studio estimates Sunday, The Devil Wears Prada 2 earned a chart topping $43 million in its second weekend, while Mortal Kombat II took in $40 million in its first.

This weekend had wide variety of newcomers playing in wide release, including the family-friendly whodunnit The Sheep Detectives and a James Cameron co-directed Billie Eilish concert film.

But it was the holdover that triumphed. The Devil Wears Prada 2, which has grossed $433.2 million worldwide in its first 12 days in release, helped push The Walt Disney Studios over $2 billion globally for the year. Its also surpassed the total grosses of the first film, which earned $327 million globally in 2006, not accounting for inflation.

Paul Dergarabedian, the head of marketplace trends for Comscore, said Mother's Day might have helped Prada get the advantage over the newcomer and have such a modest 44% dip in weekend two.

The release date was perfect, Dergarabedian said. This may be the new blueprint for how to start a summer.

Mortal Kombat II provided some gendered counterprogramming in the second weekend of Hollywood's summer movie season. Warner Bros. opened the movie in 3,503 locations where it drew a heavily male audience. According to PostTrak, 75% of the ticket buyers were men. The Devil Wears Prada 2 had almost the exact opposite gender breakdown on its first weekend.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT | Met Gala guests arrive on carpet in dramatic works of art

The first movie in this series, Mortal Kombat, was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max in April 2021 as a part of Warner Bros. pandemic-era day-and-date strategy. Reviews have been mixed for the sequel, as was its B CinemaScore. It also earned $23 million from 78 markets internationally, adding up to a $63 million global debut.

Michael landed in third place in its third weekend with another $36.5 million over the weekend, down only 33% from last weekend. The Michael Jackson biopic has now earned $240.5 million in North America, surpassing the total domestic grosses of Bohemian Rhapsody, and $577.4 million globally.

Fourth place went to Amazon MGM Studios' The Sheep Detectives which brought in $15.9 million in its first weekend in 3,457 theaters. The quirky, all-ages murder mystery features a starry ensemble including Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson and Nicholas Braun, as well as the voices of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Regina Hall and Patrick Stewart as the sheep who try to figure out who murdered their shepherd. Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore. The movie cost a reported $75 million to produce.

Rounding out the top five was Billie EilishHit Me Hard & Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D) an immersive concert experience which Cameron shared co-directing credits on with Eilish. Paramount released the movie in 2,613 theaters, where it earned $7.5 million in North America and $12.6 million internationally. The movie was very well reviewed by critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences, who gave it an A CinemaScore.

Project Hail Mary, in its eighth weekend, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, in its sixth weekend, are still going strong as well adding up to a weekend that is up significantly from the same weekend last year. Dergarabedian said the films that seem to be doing well and drawing new and repeat audiences week after week are the ones offering pure, escapist entertainment.

This is playing out very well for movie theaters right now, he said.

Top 10 movies by domestic box office

With final domestic figures being released Monday, this list factors in the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore:

1. The Devil Wears Prada 2, $43 million.

2. Mortal Kombat II, $40 million.

3. Michael, $36.5 million.

4. The Sheep Detectives, $15.9 million.

5. Billie EilishHit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, $7.5 million.

6. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, $6.6 million.

7. Project Hail Mary,$6.1 million.

8. Hokum, $3.3 million.

9. Deep Water, $780,274.

10. Animal Farm, $663,624.

To complete her dramatic look, Osakas hands were dipped in dripping red paint. A similar look by Wun sits inside the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute exhibit, Costume Art.

On the Met steps, Osaka opened her dress and removed her headpiece for a grand reveal underneath. She wowed in a sleek red beaded gown embellished with the form of a body.

Chamberlain arrived in a breathtaking Mugler by Miguel Castro Freitas hand-painted dress. The star was dipped in a rainbow of colors from her dcolletage down to the spiral train of her body-hugging dress with fringe falling down the cuffs of the long-sleeve gown.

With all the fanfare around the The Devil Wears Prada 2, Met Gala Co-chair Anna Wintour opted for a cool mint ensemble not the trendy cerulean blue from the first film. Wintours look featured a feathered cape and a beaded dress by Matthieu Blazy for Chanel that she classically paired with her signature bob and oversized sunglasses.

RELATED STORY | Staying on trend and on budget: How to find affordable spring fashion for your family

Other co-chairs of the evening Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams chose more subdued looks. Williams wore a sparkling black off-the-shoulder gown with a dazzling bejeweled neckpiece in homage to a painting of herself done by Robert Pruitt for the National Portrait Gallery. Event sponsor Lauren Snchez Bezos arrived in a form-fitting Schiaparelli gown, which she told Vogue was influenced by John Singer Sargents 1884 painting Madame X.

Some guests took the theme to another level, taking hours to transform into works of art. TikTok followers watched along as Jessica Kayll, who designs colorful silk robes, finished painting her dress in the days leading up to the gala. Kayll painted her own take on the famous Monet water lily scene right on top her dress for the gala.

When guests were not wearing art, they were making references to it. Head of Editorial Content for US Vogue Chloe Malle wore an apricot orange Colleen Allen dress inspired by Sir Frederic Leightons Flaming June painting. Actor and author Lena Dunham collaborated with Valentino designer Alessandro Michele for her red feathered dress to depict his interpretation of Judith Slaying Holofernes. As a child, Dunham told Vogue, she would visit the Met museum on Sundays and admire the paintings in the renaissance section.

One of my favorite painters from that era is Artemisia Gentileschi, who was one of the only women painting professionally in that moment, she told Vogue. So I sent some of the images to Alessandro, and because hes a genius instead of dressing me like her, he said, You are actually the blood spatter as ... Judith cuts the neck off a man.

Stars also celebrated the dress code with their accessories. Actor and fashion muse Gwendoline Christie playfully covered her face on the carpet with a mask of her own face while pop star Katy Perry opened and closed her fencing-like mask on the carpet to smile at the cameras.

Unlike last years blue carpet, this years carpet appeared intentionally forgotten by time with grass creeping up the steps. The carpet featured patches of overgrown grass peeking out from the stone steps with manicured shrubs lining the side railing and white wisteria dangling from the roof. Potted purple flowers stood at the entrance of the carpet in large terra-cotta planters.

Past Gala dress codes have honored designers and pulled from literature. Last year, the art of tailoring was center stage with the dress code Tailored for you. The high-profile event raises money for the Met's Costume Institute, and each year the dress code for the gala takes cues from the Costume Institutes spring exhibition.

On display this Spring, the Costume Art exhibit will examine the centrality of the dressed body.

The relationship between fashion and art has not always been embraced. Art historian and author Nancy Hall-Duncan writes in her book, Art X Fashion: Fashion Inspired by Art that in the 19th century, art was perceived as classical and fashion was frivolous.

When Yves Saint Laurent held the Mets first fashion exhibit in 1983, the exhibit was met with heavy criticism. Since then, the museum has held countless fashion exhibits throughout the years with museums around the world following suit. The Louvre put on its first fashion exhibition Louvre couture last year.

The dress code set by Wintour and the Met's Costume Institute curator, Andrew Bolton, is the final seal of approval that fashion is art, Hall-Duncan told The Associated Press.

Isnt that a giant step? she said. It will indeed change perceptions.
How to watch the Met Gala carpet and celebrity looks
Didn't snag one of the pricey tickets or a spot on the ultra-exclusive guestlist?

The red carpet spectacle is available for all to watch online with the Vogue livestream. Ashley Graham, La La Anthony and Cara Delevingne will be hosting the livestream starting at 6 p.m. with Emma Chamberlain interviewing guests throughout the night.

But her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, pleaded guilty on her behalf to whats commonly called a wet reckless. That allowed her to be sentenced to one day in jail that the judge said she served when she was booked, one year of probation, a required DUI class and state-mandated fines.

The plea offer was standard for defendants with no DUI history, no crash or injury on the road, and a low blood-alcohol level, the county district attorneys office said. And its especially common for defendants who have shown motivation to address their problems and seek treatment, as Spears did when she voluntarily checked in to a substance abuse treatment center last month.

I dont think anybodys happy about pleading guilty to anything, but under the circumstances, to get this behind her, I think everybody is pleased with the result, Goldstein said after the hearing. We appreciate the district attorney recognizing the positive steps that Britney is taking to help herself.

Goldstein said Spears returned home after recently completing her rehab stint, and that reports that she left early were absolutely false. Asked whats next for her, he replied, I dont know, Im sure a lot.

During the brief hearing, Spears received summary probation, which is informal and doesnt involve mandatory meetings with a parole officer. She temporarily yielded her Fourth Amendment search and seizure rights if she is pulled over, meaning she must automatically yield to searches and sobriety tests. At Goldstein's request, the judge ruled this would not apply to her home.

District Attorney Erik Nasarenko said after the hearing that Spears had taken full responsibility, but he emphasized that DUI is a serious crime and said it was essential that she follow the requirements agreed to in court, which include continued substance abuse treatment, weekly visits with a therapist and monthly visits with a psychiatrist.

We do not want Miss Spears to reoffend, Nasarenko said.

RELATED NEWS | Britney Spears charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs

She was charged Thursday with one misdemeanor DUI count, which meant she was not required to appear in court for her arraignment. But her representatives hadnt said whether she would appear, and the hearing drew an unusually heavy media turnout for Ventura, a seaside city of about 110,000 people roughly 70 miles (113 kilometers) northwest of downtown LA.

After her March 4 arrest, a representative called her actions inexcusable and said that ideally, the arrest would lead to overdue change in her life.

She was pulled over for driving her black BMW quickly and erratically on U.S. 101, the California Highway Patrol said. She appeared to be impaired, took a series of field sobriety tests, was arrested and was taken to jail, the CHP said.

Authorities said in the criminal complaint that Spears had alcohol and drugs in her system, but they didnt specify which drugs or list her blood alcohol content.

Spears grew to superstardom in the 1990s and 2000s with hits including Toxic, Gimme More and Im a Slave 4 U. Most of her nine studio albums have been certified platinum, with two diamond titles: 1999s Baby One More Time and 2000s Oops! I Did It Again.

She became a tabloid obsession in the early 2000s and a source of intense public scrutiny as she battled mental illness and paparazzi fought to document the details of her private life.

In 2008, Spears was placed under a court-ordered conservatorship, run primarily by her father and his lawyers, that would control her personal and financial decisions for well over a decade. It was dissolved in 2021.

Since then, she has married, divorced, and released a bestselling memoir, The Woman in Me.

He found that "there's been violence that occurred both ways between these parties" and urged them to figure out how to function as co-parents to their son, Ever.

"I'm hoping that you're not people who just thrive on the drama and the conflict," Minas said. "You've got to put your child first and shield the child from this conflict."

Paul, Mortensen and their families were present in court, but no other cast members from the Hulu reality show attended.

RELATED STORY | ABC pulls The Bachelorette amid Taylor Frankie Paul domestic violence allegations

Attorneys offer competing descriptions of fights

Attorneys for Paul and Mortensen offered competing versions of fights between the pair, with each suggesting the other party was the aggressor.

Paul's attorney Eric Swinyard told the court commissioner that Mortensen is much larger and stronger than Paul and that when she was faced with physical intimidation from Mortensen during an argument, she responded the same way a lot of people would.

"He said, 'Hit me,' and she did," Swinyard said.

One fight between the two came while Paul was dealing with recent miscarriages, and she felt that Mortensen had been blowing her off while their son was sick.

When Paul lost her footing and fell to the ground, Mortensen kicked her several times in the leg, Swinyard alleged. He submitted to the court photos of her bruises.

Mortensen's attorney Brent Salazar-Hall said his client was a victim of abuse from Paul, but that she kept luring him back with text messages inviting him over for intimacy.

During one argument, Paul and Mortensen were in a truck and she tried to interfere with his driving by squeezing his face, Salazar-Hall said. In response, Mortensen shoved her away, he said.

Paul's lawyers said Mortensen slammed her head into the vehicle's dashboard, causing bruises.

Mortensen had Paul's initials tattooed on the inside of his lip, which Paul's attorney pointed to as an example of his possessive nature. Mortensen's lawyer disagreed with that characterization and said many of the men on the TV show got lip tattoos of their partners' names in a humorous scene that has not yet aired.

"There seems to be a continuing attraction that they have for each other, whether it's physical, whether it's the thrill between the two of them of making themselves celebrities," Minas said.

"The problem is that the two of them can't be together in the same place at the same time before it starts to turn violent," he added.

Violations of the protective orders could result in criminal charges.

Leaked video of fight is one point of contention

Eleven fights between the exes were under examination in their protective order requests. A recently leaked video of one fight from 2023 prompted ABC to make the unprecedented move last month of shelving an already-filmed season of "The Bachelorette" starring Paul. Hulu also paused production of "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" and resumed filming last week.

In the video, Paul appeared to punch, kick and throw chairs at Mortensen while her daughter from another relationship watched and cried.

Swinyard alleged that Mortensen leaked that video to the press to ruin Paul's reality TV career just before her season of "The Bachelorette" was supposed to air.

"Our point with the video is he's not just trying to come after her for custody. He's not just trying to seek a protective order. He wants to literally destroy her," Swinyard said.

Salazar-Hall said Mortensen denies leaking the video.

Just after the fight, Paul was charged with aggravated assault and other offenses, including domestic violence in the presence of a child. The police body camera footage of her arrest was featured in the first season of the Hulu series.

Paul pleaded guilty to an assault charge, which will be reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor if she stays out of legal trouble for a three-year probationary period that ends in August. The other counts were dismissed.

Earlier this month, the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office declined to file new charges against Paul in recent fights with Mortensen. Any new charges would have violated Paul's probation from the 2023 assault.

Custody of their child is at stake

Minas said he would make custody recommendations by May 11. Mortensen has custody in the meantime.

Paul had majority custody of their son before the April 7 hearing.

A protective order in Utah can restrict or eliminate a parent's ability to see their child. When both parents have protective orders against each other, the court relies heavily on the recommendations of an attorney appointed to investigate the child's best interests.

Paul and Mortensen's son had a court-appointed attorney present at Thursday's hearing to help the commissioner determine the safest arrangement for the boy.
Denver7 News 9 - 11 am

His lawyers have said he is innocent and did not cause Rivas Hernandez's death.

Her body was found decomposing in a Tesla towed from the Hollywood Hills in September of last year.

Prosecutors said they had obtained text messages that showed their sexual relationship, including child sexual abuse images of her on his phone.

"The messages reveal the victim's jealousy over defendant's relationships with other women, as defendant led her to believe they had a future together," the document says. "She became extremely upset and threatened to disclose damaging information about her relationship with defendant to end his career and destroy his life."

RELATED STORY | Singer D4vd is arrested on suspicion of killing of a 14-year-old girl found dead in his Tesla

The filing said he sent a rideshare car to pick her up on the night of April 23, 2025, from her hometown of Lake Elsinore, some 80 miles outside of Los Angeles. The two exchanged messages until she arrived at his Hollywood home, after which her phone went silent permanently.

They allege he sent her a late-night message asking where she was in an attempt to cover up the killing.

The court filing is intended to outline the evidence that prosecutors plan to present at a preliminary evidentiary hearing beginning May 26, when a judge will determine whether there is probable cause to go to trial. The defense has not publicly provided its version of events.

The document says Burke bought two chainsaws online, used them to cut apart her body in an inflatable pool in his garage, where the girl's DNA was later found.

"Defendant took horrifying measures to destroy and discard the victim's body," prosecutors said in the brief.

Burke drove to Lake Cachuma in Santa Barbara County, about 110 miles northwest of his home, to get rid of evidence three times, the document alleges. Her passport was found there in January.

RELATED STORY | Teen girl's body found in impounded car registered to the singer d4vd

On April 24, the day after her death, he gave a radio interview and had a record-release party promoting his debut full-length album, "Withered," which was released the following day, prosecutors said in the filing.

Prosecutors allege he kept her body in his Tesla, and lied to friends and business associates who asked about the smell.

The body of Rivas Hernandez had so degraded that examiners couldn't even determine her eye color. She had braces at the time of her death, and a tattoo that read "Shhh ...." on the inside of a finger as well as his name, according to the report. Two fingers were missing as were parts of her arms and legs.

Prosecutors had not previously described how they believed Rivas Hernandez was killed or given details on their relationship. An autopsy report said she was killed by penetrating wounds.

Prosecutors said the parents of Rivas Hernandez reported her missing from her home in Lake Elsinore in February 2024. After the February report, Riverside County Sheriff's detectives contacted Burke, but he told them he had only met her once and did not know she was a minor.

After she returned home that February, her parents took away her cellphone, but Burke drove to her hometown and paid a friend of Rivas Hernandez $1,000 to give her a phone so they could communicate.

She was reported missing again in April 2024. The document said that year, she spent much of her time at Burke's home in the Hollywood Hills and traveled with him to Las Vegas, London, and Texas to meet his family.

The defense attorneys asked Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. The singers fans, known as Swifties, who had flown to Austria from across the globe to attend a performance of her record-setting Eras Tour were devastated, but rallied to turn Vienna into a citywide trading post for friendship bracelets and singalongs.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT | Taylor Swift explains why she waited to speak about foiled terror plot on canceled Austria shows

The defendant, a 21-year-old Austrian citizen known only as Beran A. in line with Austrian privacy rules, faced charges including terrorist offenses and membership in a terrorist organization. He could be sentenced to up to 20 years in prison, and has been in custody since August 2024.

The Vienna plot drew comparisons to a 2017 attack by a suicide bomber at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester, England, that killed 22 people. The bomb detonated at the end of Grandes concert as thousands of young fans were leaving, becoming the deadliest extremist attack in the United Kingdom in recent years.

Defendant regrets his actions

Anna Mair, his defense attorney, said her client pleaded guilty to the charges related to the concert plot.

Of course, he deeply regrets it all, Mair said outside the court, adding that he says it was the biggest mistake of his life.

Austrian media reported that he also pleaded guilty to being a member of a terrorist organization.

Beran A. is facing trial alongside Arda K., whose full name also has not been made public. They, along with a third man, planned to carry out simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates during Ramadan in 2024 in the name of the Islamic State group. Beran A. and Arda K. never carried out their attacks.

Only Beran A. was charged in connection with the concert plot. He pleaded not guilty to the charges related to the plot for simultaneous attacks.

He allegedly planned to target onlookers gathered outside Ernst Happel Stadium up to 30,000 each night, with another 65,000 inside the venue with knives or homemade explosives. The suspect hoped to kill as many people as possible, authorities said in 2024. The U.S. provided intelligence that fed into the decision to cancel the concerts.

RELATED STORY | Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour' concert film premieres free in Austria after canceled shows

Beran A. also allegedly networked with other members of the Islamic State group ahead of the planned attack. Prosecutors say they discussed purchasing weapons and making bombs, and that the defendant also sought to illegally buy weapons in the days ahead of the performance. In addition, he swore allegiance to the militant group.

Authorities searched his apartment on Aug. 7, 2024, and found bomb-making materials. The concerts were scheduled to begin the next day.

Having our Vienna shows canceled was devastating, Swift wrote in a statement posted to Instagram two weeks later. The reason for the cancellations filled me with a new sense of fear, and a tremendous amount of guilt because so many people had planned on coming to those shows.

A representative for Swift did not immediately return a request for comment Tuesday.

The trial is being held in Wiener Neustadt, about an hour south of Vienna. The proceedings are set to continue May 12.

Three attacks planned in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and UAE

Prosecutors have also filed terrorism-related charges against Arda K. in the trial in connection with the plan for simultaneous attacks in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

The third man in that plot, Hasan E., allegedly stabbed a security guard with a knife at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on March 11, 2024. He was arrested and remains in pretrial detention in Saudi Arabia, Austrian prosecutors said.

Beran A. and Arda K. did not carry out their plans in Turkey and the UAE. Weve all been there, right? Kimmel asked at the beginning of his monologue on Mondays episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!

What a day.

The pressure which is also coming from President Donald Trump and a host of his allies has created a headache for new Disney CEO Josh DAmaro, who succeeded Bob Iger just six weeks ago.

The Kimmel controversy is the first major Trump test for DAmaro, who previously ran Disneys theme parks and now oversees networks like ABC as well.

RELATED STORY | Trump says Kimmel 'should be immediately fired' over joke about Melania before White House dinner shooting

Kimmel quipped on last Thursdays episode that the First Lady had a glow like an expectant widow.

It was a very light roast joke about the fact that hes almost 80 and shes younger than I am, Kimmel said (Donald Trump is 79; Melania Trump is 56).

But after a gunman opened fire outside the dinner ballroom at the White House Correspondents Dinner on Saturday, Trump and his allies have recontextualized the joke as a call to violence.

It was not by any stretch of the definition a call to assassination, Kimmel said in Mondays monologue. And they know that. Ive been very vocal for many years speaking out against gun violence in particular.

I agree that hateful and violent rhetoric is something we should reject, Kimmel said. I also should point out Donald Trump is allowed to say whatever he wants to say, as are you and as am I and as are all of us, because under the First Amendment we have as Americans the right to free speech.

There is no indication that Disney is thinking about firing Kimmel.

A spokesperson for DAmaro did not respond to a request for comment. Representatives for ABC and Kimmel have also remained tight-lipped since the controversy erupted.

But actions speak louder than comments, and Mondays actions like the business-as-usual attitude at Kimmels show signaled that Disney is not buckling under Trumps pressure.

Pro-Trump media outlets and influencers blasted Kimmel online after Saturday, foreshadowing a concerted effort from the Trump administration to push him out.

The alleged gunman was charged Monday with attempting to assassinate Trump.

The first lady condemned Kimmel on Monday morning, and the president followed up a few hours later, calling Kimmels on-air comment a despicable call to violence and linking it directly to the shooting incident.

Disney rerun

For Disney, this all feels a bit like a rerun.

Last September, amid an earlier Trump administration pressure campaign against Kimmel, ABC suspended the show indefinitely, only to bring it back less than a week later.

The network managed to anger both Trump opponents for benching Kimmel and appearing to capitulate to the president and Trump fans by allowing Kimmel back on the air.

That time around, when Iger was still CEO, ABC felt it had to move quickly after two big owners of ABC-affiliated stations, Nexstar and Sinclair, said they would preempt Kimmels show in their respective markets.

Igers deputy Dana Walden, who has a close relationship with Kimmel, later said the suspension was an effort to take the temperature down after Kimmel angered conservatives with a comment about the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk.

We wanted to resolve the situation in a certain way to protect our employees, to think about our audience, she told Bloomberg.

Walden is now DAmaros No. 2 as the president and chief creative officer of Disney.

Nexstar and Sinclair are still in business with ABC and are still on the record as having reservations about Kimmels show. But they might hesitate to yank Kimmel this time around, since the backlash to their boycott was so intense last September.
Kimmel pushes back on Trump calls for his firing
Kimmel, who has been an outspoken critic of the president for years and has attended No Kings rallies in recent months, has argued that politics are unavoidable for him right now.

Earlier this month on Michelle Obamas IMO podcast, he said, I think it would be embarrassing if we didnt talk about this. It would be shameful.
The-CNN-Wire & 2026 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Discovery Company. All rights reserved.

He then stated, 'Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow,'" Trump said on his Truth Social platform. "A day later a lunatic tried entering the ballroom of the White House Correspondents Dinner, loaded up with a shotgun, handgun, and many knives. He was there for a very obvious and sinister reason."

Earlier in the day, First Lady Melania Trump called Kimmel "a coward," and also urged ABC to "take a stand" against the comedian.

"Kimmels hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country," Trump said. "His monologue about my family isnt comedy- his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America. People like Kimmel shouldnt have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate. A coward, Kimmel hides behind ABC because he knows the network will keep running cover to protect him. Enough is enough."

Kimmel made the joke two days before a gunman attempted to breach the ballroom where President Trump and the first lady were joined by more than 2,400 other guests to celebrate the First Amendment and the White House press. Last year, President Trump repeatedly blasted Kimmel over controversial remarks he made following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The comedian was then briefly suspended from hosting his show in September but returned a week later.

Trump has also taken aim at other late-night comedians over jokes he doesn't approve of. She was 80 years old.

The singer, who joined forces with her cousins Ronnie Spector and Estelle Bennett to form the musical trio, passed away on Sunday morning, according to her daughter.

Writing on Facebook on Sunday night, Nedra K. Ross said: At approximately 8:30 this morning our mother Nedra Talley Ross went home to be with the Lord. She was safe in her own bed at home with her family close, knowing she was loved. Thank you Lord.

Meanwhile, a post on the bands official Facebook account also shared the news: It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Nedra Talley Ross passing. She was a light to those who knew and loved her.

As a founding member of The Ronettes, along with her beloved cousins Ronnie and Estelle, Nedras voice, style and spirit helped define a sound that would change music. Her contribution to the groups story and their defining influence will live forever.

Rest peacefully dear Nedra. Thanks for the magic.

Born in New York City on January 27, 1946, Ross formed the band originally known as Ronnie and the Relatives and later the Darling Sisters with sisters Spector and Bennett in 1959. Ross and Bennett started by singing backup, while Spector took the lead.

They only became famous in 1963 after signing with music producer Phil Spector, creator of the 1960s Wall of Sound style. Be My Baby, their first single with Spector, was a massive hit. Among their other hits were: Baby I Love You, Walking in the Rain and Do I Love You?

They also enjoyed huge success in the UK and were billed alongside the likes of the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton and the Yardbirds. They also opened for the Beatles on their final US tour in 1966.

The group broke up in 1967. Soon after, Ronnie wed Phil Spector, with whom she had a tumultuous relationship. They divorced in 1974.

The Ronettes were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, two years before Bennetts death. Spector died in 2022.

Inducting them that night was Rolling Stone Keith Richards. Recalling his first encounter with the trio in 1964, he said: They touched my heart right there and then and they touch it still.

In their acceptance speech that night, Ross spoke of the dream she and her cousins had starting out in their teens.

We had a dream, but with a dream you need to have people behind you with your dream. For us, my mom knocked on doors when people didnt want to hire and put under contract three young pretty girls that they said were going to change their minds down the road. I thank you for that God knows what youve done.

She went on to thank Jesus for saving her life through open heart surgery, as well as others, including her husband, Scott Ross, and their four children.

Show business is a thing that can be great, but it can be bad, too, she said. For us, we had a family that gave us a core to help stabilize us in a very difficult crazy world. It was a fun time. I thank God.
The-CNN-Wire & 2026 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Based on a preliminary count, Warner shareholders overwhelmingly agreed to the proposed $81 billion buyout valued at nearly $111 billion including debt, based on Warners current outstanding shares.

While the deal still faces regulatory review, the megamerger would vastly reshape Hollywood and the wider media landscape, further consolidating power in an industry already run by just a handful of major players. Paramount itself was acquired by Skydance just last year.

Here's what a Paramount-Warner combo could look like for streaming, movies, news and more.

Streaming

Paramount Skydance would own both Paramount+ and, with the sale approved by shareholders Thursday, Warner's HBO Max. Company executives have said that they would combine these streamers into one platform.

What that combined service would look like (or be named) is unclear. But Paramount CEO David Ellison suggested that HBO could still have some level of independence, at least production-wise.

Our view point is, HBO should stay HBO, Ellison said during a conference call last month. They built a phenomenal brand, they are a leader in this space and we just want them to continue doing more of it. But by bringing the platforms together, all of our content will be able to reach even a broader audience than we can do standalone.

Warner and its HBO streaming platform have a powerful lineup that includes The Pitt, Game of Thrones and Sex and the City." And beyond Harry Potter, Warner's library lists blockbuster films such as Sinners, Barbie and "Superman" (the company also owns DC Studios). Titles like Top Gun," "Titanic, The Godfather" and Yellowstone" fill Paramount's catalog.

In the U.S., according to streaming guide JustWatch, HBO Max controlled about 12% of on-demand subscriptions in the first quarter of this year compared to 3% for Paramount+. Combining those two services would still fall slightly below Prime Video's 17% market share, and the 19% of the market commanded by Netflix. Disney owns about 27% of the market between Hulu and Disney+.

Beyond HBO Max, Paramount would also acquire Warners smaller Discovery+ streamer. And apart from Paramount+, Paramount owns Pluto TV and BET+, too.

Critics are skeptical of consumer benefits touted by Paramount. While company executives have continued to laud larger content libraries and the potential for Paramount to better compete with bigger rivals, a combination with Warner Bros. would mean fewer platform choices when it comes to streaming overall. Critics warn that could actually mean higher prices at a time when the price of almost all subscriptions continues to tick higher.

Moviemaking and theatrical releases

Paramount and Warner Bros. are two of Hollywoods oldest studios. A merger would mean fewer companies control legacy film production.

Ellison has said he wants the combined company to grow a slate to more than 30 movies a year, keeping Paramount and Warner Bros. as stand-alone operations. And in a star-studded CinemaCon appearance last week, he promised a 45-day exclusive window for films in theaters, pledging a complete commitment to the industry.

Still, others are wary about what further consolidation could mean for jobs and which projects are greenlit down the road. Regulatory filings have indicated that the new ownership will be looking for ways to cut costs including layoffs and downsizing some overlapping operations. Paramount is taking on billions of dollars in debt to finance the deal.

Warner Bros. just had a banner year of both major blockbusters and critical successes. The studio racked up 30 Oscar nominations thanks to Sinners, Weapons, and One Battle After Another (which took home the top best picture slot). Paramount received zero. And in 2025, Warner Bros. movies including A Minecraft Movie, Superman and Sinners accounted for 21% of the domestic box office. Paramounts market share was only 6%, driven largely by Mission: Impossible The Final Reckoning."

The industry has already experienced a sizeable consolidation. Almost 10 years ago, Hollywoods big six became the big five when Disney bought most of 20th Century Fox. And if the Warner sale goes through, a new big four era would be underway with a bigger Paramount standing alongside Disney, Universal and Sony.

News

CNN would come under the same roof as Paramount-owned CBS. That would bring together two of Americas biggest names in television news, although whether CNN would continue to operate as a separate brand from CBS has yet to be confirmed.

Regardless, there is a lot of anxiety about Paramount taking control of CNN a network that has long attracted ire from President Donald Trump and his allies. Critics point to Trumps close relationship with the Ellison family, particularly billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who is putting up billions of dollars to back the bid by his sons company.

Since coming under Skydance ownership less than a year ago, CBS has already seen significant shifts in editorial leadership. It's taken steps to appeal to more conservative viewers in its news operations, notably with the installation of Free Press founder Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief of CBS News. If the companys proposed Warner takeover is successful, many expect similar changes at CNN.

Some officials in the Trump administration have also made their opinions very clear about CNN's future ownership. In March, the White House attacked CNN for its coverage of the U.S. and Israel's war against Iran and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth told reporters that "the sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.

Ellison has said that editorial independence will absolutely be maintained under Paramount ownership. Its maintained at CBS. Itll be maintained at CNN, Ellison told CNBC's Squawk on the Street in March, while noting that his company wants to speak to the 70% of viewers who he said identify as center-left or center-right.

The acting head of the U.S. Justice Department's antitrust division has also said that its regulatory review will not be political. Still, critics are skeptical particularly following Skydance's acquisition of Paramount in August. That merger was approved by the Federal Communications Commission just weeks after the company agreed to pay Trump $16 million to settle a lawsuit over editing at CBS' 60 Minutes program. The president has continued to publicly lash out at 60 Minutes programming since.

Other TV and cable networks

CNN is just one of the cable operations that Warner is selling. And the proposed merger would make Paramount's TV footprint even bigger.

The company also owns Discovery, TNT, TBS, Food Network, Cartoon Network and Animal Planet, among other networks all of which would come under Paramount ownership if the deal goes through. Meanwhile, Paramount already has its own sizeable broadcast lineup. Beyond CBS, that includes Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Comedy Central, Showtime and more.

Discovery shareholders voted in support of selling the entire business to Paramount for $31 a share, the company said. Including debt, the deal is valued at nearly $111 billion.

Skydance-owned Paramount wants to buy all of Warner. That means HBO Max, cult-favorite titles like Harry Potter and even CNN could soon find themselves under the same roof with CBS, Top Gun and the Paramount+ streaming service. A greenlight from company shareholders increases the likelihood of that becoming a reality.

But it's not a done deal quite yet. The acquisition still faces ongoing regulatory reviews. Warner has said it expects to close sometime in the third fiscal quarter.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT | Netflix declines to raise its offer to buy Warner, says deal isn't 'attractive'

Meanwhile, Warner shareholders rejected a separate measure Thursday that outlined post-merger payments for company executives.

Paramounts quest for Warner has been far from smooth sailing. And while Warner's board now endorses the Paramount merger, it wasnt always eager to enter this particular marriage.

Late last year, Warner rebuffed Paramounts overtures to instead strike a $72 billion studio and streaming deal with Netflix. Paramount, meanwhile, went directly to shareholders with a hostile bid to take over the whole company, including the cable business that Netflix did not want.

All three companies spent months fighting publicly over who had the better offer on the table. Warners board repeatedly backed Netflixs bid. But eventually, Paramount offered more money and Netflix abruptly bowed out of the race rather than prolonging the fight.

That corporate drama may now be over, but the implications remain. Thousands of actors, directors, writers and other industry professionals have voiced unequivocal opposition to the deal, in a letter arguing that further consolidation will lead to job losses and fewer choices for filmmakers and movie goers.

Jane Fondas Committee for the First Amendment called Warner shareholders' vote to advance the merger a serious setback on Thursday but maintained the fight is far from over. In a statement, the advocacy group pointed to past efforts to challenge consolidation and maintained a handful of powerful decision-makers should not be allowed to quietly reshape American media, culture, and creative life without accountability.

Some lawmakers have also sounded the alarm. In a spotlight hearing on the merger held in Washington last week, Democratic Sen. Cory Booker said that not just a corporate deal was at stake but who controls news, who controls entertainment, who controls storytelling.

The merger would bring together two of Hollywoods remaining five legacy studios. It would also join two major streaming platforms Paramount+ and HBO Max and two big names in America's TV news landscape CBS and CNN as well as a heap of other brands and entertainment networks.

Company executives argue this will be good news for consumers, who they say will have access to bigger content libraries, particularly if HBO Max and Paramount+ become one streaming service. And Paramount CEO David Ellison has tried to assure filmmakers with a 45-day theatrical window guarantee and goal to release 30 movies a year between Paramount and Warner, which he's said will remain stand-alone operations under a combined company.

RELATED STORY | Federal regulators approve Paramount's $8 billion deal with Skydance, capping months of turmoil

I love cinema and I love film, Ellison said at CinemaCon last week. "You can count on our complete commitment.

But the new owner will also be looking to cut costs. Regulatory filings have already indicated that would include layoffs and downsizing some overlapping operations. And critics are skeptical about consumer benefits warning of higher prices that could arise when it comes to streaming, and potentially less diversity in content down the road.

Then theres the news. Since coming under Skydance ownership less than a year ago, Paramount-owned CBS has already seen significant editorial shifts, notably with the installation of Free Press founder Bari Weiss as CBS News editor-in-chief. If the Warner takeover goes through, many are expecting similar changes at CNN, which has long attracted ire from President Donald Trump.

Other questions of political influence have piled up. The Justice Department and company leadership have maintained politics will not play a role in the regulatory process but Trump himself has publicly waded into Warners future at times, despite backpedaling on what he once suggested his personal role would be. Trump also has a close relationship with the Ellison family, particularly billionaire Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who is putting billions of dollars on the table to back the bid for his sons company.

Meanwhile, Paramount has secured money from several sovereign investment funds including Saudi Arabias Public Investment Fund, as well as funds from the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, per regulatory filings. But such investors will not have voting rights in a future Paramount-Warner combo, the filings noted. Paramount has not publicly specified how much theyre contributing.

Other countries, including European regulators, are looking the deal and states could try to challenge it, too. California Attorney General Rob Bonta has been particularly vocal about the transaction, and said his state is investigating it.

Shares of Paramount slid more than 4% on the results of the vote Thursday, and Warner Bros. slipped as well.
Denver7 News 9 - 11 am
